Yes, the most realistic thing to do is to put out an ad and wait for people to apply. With a normal team that isn't an issue as they already have players and getting new ones isn't urgent. It is however not very realistic for promoted clubs into the Conference N/S (I forget the new name) to have neither players nor staff. So in such cases, after having tried the Job Centre without result for a month or two, I think it's reasonable to go to them. You will only get crap either way, but this way at least you get it.

Some obviously want to join, so there are issues with the Job Centre. You can claim they're not reading the paper or seeing the ads of course. But none for 2 months?

I'm not sure why it's like this, but my guess is that the bar to join clubs are lower if they come to you, than if he has to come to the club. Let's say a club has a reputation (or whatever) of 3. It has to have 5 for him to apply to their ads, but only 2 to be interested if they come to him. Hence more people are interested than applying.

Would be strange to do it like this - there are surely many variables in play. But the fact is that staff who are interested in joining you don't apply to the ads.

Wrong pangea, if you don't have a scout and no one applies or you can't persuade a staff member to take the job, then you do without.
Eventually you'll either succeed or get a P45, cue move to next club where hopefully your luck will improve.

LLM to me equals play the hand you are dealt.

TBH the jobcentre can be a right pain sometimes in 08, so far. So if the staff search is the only way, I don't see a big problem...

Put me in the "if no one responds in a month, and I have no scouts, use the staff search" category, which I thought was kosher, LLM-wise.

I really don't get why there'd be no one who applies, yet 250 or so scouts with appropriate reputations/geographical locations in the search screen. Although, given some of their stats, maybe they can't read.

I agree up to a point, but LLM to me is about realism even more than about impossible challenges (even if the two go hand in hand ). If this were to happen to me IRL, I'd offer some wino a bottle of beaujolais primeur every Saturday to go visit a match somewhere and tell which players he liked. No manager out there is stuck without any player info whatsoever.

FM08 is flawed. It's been patched already, it's a Beta patch even, the actual patch won't be out for God knows when...then there'll be another.

Is that reason to cast aside LLM ethics?

Not to me, not in a million years.

FM07's very good, playable, not flawed so as you'd notice, therefore I, personally, will continue to play FM07 until FM08's fixed.

I know the three season rule but as this is on topic...

I put out an ad for a scout and in 12 days I got 5 applicants. All unemployed and found a scout with 10 for judging ability and 5 for potential. Not great but enough that I can send him out and look for some players. I will continue the ad and see if any other better one come in.

So from the responses I think the job centre is working ok (I'm using the beta patch btw)

Ian, in 06 the centre didn't work, so we had no choice... If it doesn't work on 08 (I hear from some it doesn't), no choice either.

It's working just fine for me though \o/
