As this is my first post not replying to something else I'll introduce myself. I'm trying out proper LLM for the first time, although I did a test save with a "big" club (Morecambe) to check that I was happy with the game engine first. Apart from the fact that it was Morecambe I adhered to LLM rules in all other ways (scout all signings, no cheating or taking tips, place job adverts for staff etc). Beta patch later and I'm happy enough. The reason I chose Morecambe was to ensure I didn't end up scouting players that might interest me later on.
I've opted for the giddy heights of the Northern Irish 2nd Division with relegation battlers Chimney Corner. For some reason the youth team get paid more than the first team but otherwise I'm happy with my choice of club. Rubbish players even by NI2 standards, woeful first team coach, worst assistant manager I've ever seen in any game, but they do have a scout with acceptable ratings.
Anyway one of my first decisions was to look for a decent ass man. I got five applications, three of them unattached. All three are player/coaches over the age of 40, rubbish coaches but country miles better than anything I've got playing wise. Well, they could probably get onto a Northern Irish Division One relegation battler's bench. I can only dream of having someone that good. None of them are northern irish, so I can't even scout them. I signed one as a player/assistant manager (that's what he applied to be so no moral or realism dilemma there). As for the others, I REALLY don't want them as coaches, but they're decent players. They turned down trials so I didn't persue it.
Four months later I'm 10th of 12. I naively opted for a top half finish to secure an extra £200 p/w wages, but there ya go. In any case I brought some "talent" (players worthy of playing in the division) and decided that I can afford to bring one more coach in (due in no small part to my scout being useless). So I placed a new advert and as if by magic, these guys are still unemployed and still advertised as players/coaches. I may or may not proceed anyway, but I was just curious as to what the forum consensus is on signing these guys as players only?
Without scouting them or trialling them, it'd be a bit of a grey move I would have thought - are their playing stats all visible or something, so that you know they're better than your current players?
My opinion is that if you find a suitable applicant for your backroom staff who also turns out to be a half decent player then that's a nice little bonus.
If his age means he can no longer cut it on the park you've still got the coach that who wanted in the first place, sign away.
As for signing them as players only I'm not sure I would go for that & the guy is unlikely to accept the terms as he applied for a non playing position.
Ok. They apply for you as coaching staff, you give them the once over and decide they don't cut it as a coach, but recognise their talent and offer them a contract as a player. Where's the harm?
I figure, you've found them through their application and if they accept on slightly different terms then no harm/no foul.
You got them through ads. If they turn out to be able to hit the ball too, that's a bonus. Signing them as staff/player is no issue here.
I don't agree you can sign them just as players though. You found them through staff ads, and would not have found the players otherwise. You are not in a position to scout them either, and they turned down trials.
I see your point in the way he has come to your notice Pangaea (through job add).
But if I thought he still had a season or two in him I may consider just giving him a playing contract.
Aberdeen did this last year, after a greying player/manager was sacked by Dundee Utd, he was offered a playing contract, and did quite well until securing a new managerial position earlier this season. He was the clubs top scorer when he left.
Thanks for the responses. The issue is I'm only supposed to have one coach and the board (probably) won't allow me to have any more coaches.
For the record I can see some of their stats, but in both cases 90% of the ones I'd look for in that position are revealed. Anyway, after careful consideration of the situation I came to the conclusion that if an ex premiership player went to league two for a coaching role, he'd accept nothing else. This is the same thing on a lower scale, so it'd be unrealistic. That said, I still think a lot of managers/chairmen would be cheeky enough to try it.
At the risk of tipping (censor/delete if need be), I came up with an alternative solution that could eventually solve my playing and non-playing problems, but they weren't having it
