Fair points Matt and scottn72, but when i last tried to arrange part-time training schedules for different positions, i was met with horrendous injury crises.

It's a no-no for me since, although that was FM2006, so maybe i should give it a try again...

I will try and get the best quality coaches that will apply, but don't do specific training schedules as I found like nuphonic above that it caused injuries.

Also, last time I retrained a player (on FM08) it took 6 months. I think it can depend on how young your player is and how flexible too.

:o OK, investigated this a little. A bloke at work plays in the Highland League, and he told me they are do pretty much the same training, only difference being, strkers get a few minutes extra shooting practice.

May need to rethink my training now.

Aye, but a crucial point is that when you train as a team no matter what the situation you will get players (defenders) defending and players attacking (offmid/strikers). Hence the defenders will get more training within the area of defending than strikers even though they execute the same drills.

This is also true when you practice set pieces. Defenders will more often take up a defensive position and therefore get more defensive practice.

Not being english I cannot really testament to the quality of the Highland League. But it should not be much higher/lower than the level I played at. And if that is the case, I would say their trainer is stupid if he does not designate drills for different skillsets and positions.

I play at the lowest level in Holland and we train (honestly, we do) a bit. Usually we'll end up playing 3/4/5-a-side, mostly attackers vs defenders.

Apparently, they only have 1 1/2 hours twice a week, not a lot of time, and mainly do some fitness and possession/passing drills.

What version of FM had training micro-management?

In that version, you could choose specific drills and training regimes for every day/session, varying from a classic 11 against 11 training match, to advanced off-the-ball and tactical exercises.

The way i see it, i seriously doubt lower league coaching staff has the expertise to organize advanced training drills. Some fitness work, some basic skills training, maybe as scott said, some extra shooting, and off to the pub for a pint or three.

Therefore, i'd still think that leaving training to default is the most realistic option for non professional sides on FM. But again, that is my personal opinion and wouldn't force it on anyone.

I usually set up a pre-season schedule, running up and down mountains.

It could however be an idea to do more specialized training. With the default all players get the same training. While in real-life defenders do more defensive work, while attackers do offensive work. Even if they only play 5-a-side, the players will play in their usual positions, and thus get 'specialized' training. I don't think FM takes this into account. As I understand it, with the default training a DC will get the exact same training as a ST.

Making specialized training for each position is unlikely (wing-backs, DC, etc), but a bit more general off/def training would be fairly realistic, I think. It's not quite right that both strikers and DCs train the same amount of, say, shooting.

Would be nice with input from the seasoned llamas

I think it was CM4 or 03/04. I didn't like that set-up personally. I like the way it is now.

I remember that I have tried retraining a WB to a proper DL last season. That seemed to work but it took a lot of months time.

Maybe I should have tried to retrain him to left-sided sweeper instead.
