I don't think Gary Neville has got much football left in him, will he ever get over his injuries? There has been a constant stream of them for the past couple of years now. We lack leadership in alot of games and as our captain is always injured, we don't have a real leader on the pitch in the majority of games. This is an issue for me because you need someone to take the game by the scruff of the neck at times, like against Reading. Giggs, although a great player, isn't a great captain and we should start anew for the new generation.
So who are the contenders?
Well we'll start with Vidic. He is first choice in the team, is a great player and has good qualities. On the pitch he is strong, fast and gets stuck in, things you want your captain to be. Of the pitch he seems to be outspoken but not too much. I don't really like defenders as captain but he would probably be my choice.
From the midfield I don't think that there is a stand out choice, Ronaldo as captain? Can't see it. Nor Giggs or Nani. It's a bit late for Scholes to take up the captaincy and he isn't the type anyway. Then no one else is really guaranteed a place in the team. Carrick doesn't seem the obvious choice as he is yet to impose him self on the club and Hargreaves seems to have the right qualities but has he been at the club long enough to have the authority?
Rooney is probably the only other stand out candidate, he has great passion and fight and is one of our best players. He may still be a bit immature but the captaincy could be the making of him. I wouldn't be disappointed if Rooney was made captain but we would have to make sure he was ready for it and could move his game to the next level.
I would probably give the captaincy to rio ferdinand. He is very commanding and fight for man utd rights when fouls are given. When he is captain, i've noticed that man utd conceded very little goals or no goals. Van der sar is my second choice as he is experienced and can command from the back. He also like to gets the crowd going.
