Default Problem with using automate and jpegs

My first post, hope its in the right place!
I have a problem when trying to batch resize. I want to use automate to resize all the images from my memory card after downloading to the PC.The problem is, after it opens each file, it brings up the jpeg options dialogue box and asks for input. This means I cant let it just get on with the resizing, I have to press enter to confirm the jpeg quality EVERY time.
Is there a way of getting round this? The only way Ive found is to first save them all as TIFFs using automate and then resave them as jpegs. Not ideal Im sure you'll agree.
Any thoughts?

Hi Tracerfire,

You must have created an action which you then selected in the Batch dialog. A first guess would be to go to the Actions Palette, open the particular action you are choosing for your resizing operation and make sure the little dialog icon next to the activating check mark is turned off.

In my little sample action below, I have the dialog turned on in the top part of the action and off in the bottom. If that isn't the issue, you probably used the Save As... dialog. If so, try creating a new action using Save For Web... (if you are resaving as a JPEG keep your quality maximum if you intend to print. You are adding JPEG artifacts by resaving a JPEG.)

Thanks for that, however, it doesnt solve my problem. The dialogue icon is unchecked.
I dont want to use save for web, because it opens up image ready, plus it says the file is too large for what save for web was designed for.
Is it anything to do with these settings ?
Scale Styles
Constrain proportions
resample image bicubic
I have them all checked.

It doesnt seem to matter if I choose save or save as, I still get the jpeg options dialog box up after each image.
Thanks in advance!

How big are the files at start (pixel size and mb)? I presume they are JPEGs resaved into a resized JPEG?

Just a note, on my installation of PS, using Edit > Save For Web... doesn't open ImageReady. It does bring up the Save For Web dialog, though.

Furthermore... I just did an action with Save As... (saving a JPEG to a JPEG and checked the "Save as a copy" check box and was able to run the action without any dialog coming up. Maybe that will help.

Tracerfire, how are you hoping to save the files? Are you asking it to simply 'save' over the original jpegs? Or are you asking it to save to a different location with a 'save as'? Do you have a save as part of your action, or are you asking it to do that as part of the batch processing dialog box?

Reasons I ask...

When saving a digital camera file over the top of the original for the first time, it'll want to know the quality setting you wish to use, as the camera jpegs work on a different scale of settings.

If you're asking in the batch process dialog box where to save it, it comes up with the same thing, unless you have save options in your action.

The solution...

When writing your action, include a 'save as' to any location you like, tick the save as copy box in the save dialog, make sure that it specifies the quality, and tell it to close without saving. Then, when running the batch process, tell it to save to a folder (or save and close) and tick the 'overide action save as'. It will take the settings you specified in the action, and apply those when saving to the folder you've just specified in the batch dialog.

Complicated enough? Sorry, it's difficult to explain, but once you've done it the first time it's quite simple. Hope that fixes it for you.

Victoria

I think that'll do it Victoria.

I was also going to mention checking the "overide action save as" option in the automate settings dialogue.

Good info Welles, thanks. [righton]

FYI... i do believe that i read the "Save for Web" window IS in fact a component of IR. It's just opened up in PS. In the bottomright corner of the window you'll notice a "Edit in ImageReady" icon. That doesn't have anything to do with it being a component of IR, i just thought i'd point that out.

Hmmm...could be. All I suggested was using Save for Web... doesn't launch IR, it just opens direcly in PS. I often use that Edit in IR icon to launch IR and automatically import the layers I've created in PS files to create little animations.
