Made a comment on IRC the other day which raised a few eyebrows. Something along the lines of:
"I love the close season - I've signed 8 players already and have offers in on another 17".
It just so happened that my scouts had turned up a lot of players over the previous season whose contracts expired at the end of June, and I always put in offers for any I think will improve my side.
But, am I going overboard? What is player turnover like in the lower leagues? Is it wrong that my starting XI for this season contains only 2 (would be 3 except for an injury) of last year's promtion winners?
Anyway, it depends. Especially when teams get relegated, there can be huge changes to a squad. In Germany, lots of contracts are only valid for the league the club is in, and players can leave on a free when the club gets relegated.
If it's a huge change every season then I'd be inclined to say, it's unrealistic. If it's only from time to time, I'd call it a big cut and would see it realistic.
Michal, I don't think it would be unheard of for a newly promoted team with ambitions, to sign players they think would be more beneficial to the new higher league they're in.
I'm sure Gretna did a lot of this on the way to the Premier.
Some teams exchange more players than that in Slovenian top flight. To be honest, during my newly gained experience with Slovenian lowest tiers (not playable in FM), I have found out that lower you go the higher the rotation of players. Meaning that some teams exchange entire squad during off- and pre- season.
This is mostly due to the fact that you rarely see a player in his good years in lowest leagues. There are mostly youngsters or veterans. Former (if there is a tiny chance of being ok) get invite to higher league teams (Even their youth teams), later usually retire or get thrown out of club due to poor performances.
