Lennon reveals Celtic pain
By Phil Jackson - Created on 21 Jun 2007

Neil Lennon admits he was left bewildered by Gordon Strachan's decision to substitute him in his last match for Celtic.

The 35-year-old midfielder skippered The Hoops to the league and cup double in his seventh and final season at Celtic Park, before moving to Nottingham Forest this summer.

But Strachan controversially decided to substitute his captain with 20 minutes left of the Scottish Cup final against Dunfermline, which The Bhoys went on to win 1-0.

Despite emerging from the dressing room to lift the trophy, the former Leicester City star has spoken of the pain the decision caused him.

"I must admit I was disappointed with the substitution," Lennon told the Daily Record. "I would be lying if I said anything else.

"It wasn't as if I was raging, or running about the dressing room kicking things around. I was just sad. Gutted in fact.

"I just couldn't understand his decision. It wasn't anything to do with the fact this was my last game. The whole 'Neil Lennon Cup Final' didn't wash with me in the first place. I didn't call it that - I've always been a team player - and I felt uncomfortable with it.

"All I wanted was to win the cup and go out with a double and I simply didn't understand why it was my number that came up."

But Lennon has dismissed suggestions of a rift with coach Strachan, who he has the utmost respect for.

"I've heard people say it looked like a spiteful decision but I don't agree with that for a minute. I don't think Gordon is like that," he added.

"He makes decisions he thinks are in the best interests of the team. It's all about how he sees it. Whether the players like it or not has nothing to do with it."

It wasn't a surprise Neil, you were the worst player on the park (or worst equal with Pressley).

Walked into the pub literally 100 yards from my house after work about 4 hours ago for a glass of coke with my Father and Adam Virgo was standing playing on the quiz machine.

He gave my Dad a signed Coventry shirt (Coventry fan for some reason) from his time there and my Dad said "you'll be back playing for us when the American money rolls in" and he didn't say anything but made a face that suggested he was thinking "I wouldn't step foot in Coventry again for 100 grand a week"

Awesome guy tbf, comes back in pre-season to see his mates from school, makes me laugh, him and his mate were arguing about Virgo owing him 21p, and he said "feck off, I gave you 20p the other day" and his mate was "fine you owe me a penny then you twat!" when he earns about £15k a week.

Quite surprised you guys are after Donati and Delvecchio. Tbf, they are nothing more than average Serie A players who have not done anything special. I would have thought your money on midfielders would be better spent elsewhere. Do you have any further targets in this area?

Appiah was the main target. I think we've spoken to him but it's starting to drag out hence us switching target.

I don't know all that much about delvecchio but Donati has obvious talent. Perhaps lost his way abit and failed to settle after being shipped about in italy, and he may be a decent gamble for 3M. In all honesty, I'm not keen on italians coming over here. Apart from a select few of course, they just don't have the desire to want to adapt to british culture and the british game. I may be wrong of course.

and Koumas, forgot about him.

Overpriced, overpriced and overpriced.

It's difficult for us seeing as we don't get 60M tv money every year.

please get run over by 10000000 buses. Money grabbing ****.

Koumas would be great, so much more effective than Mr. 1 trick. More likely to spend 3 million on some *****y player from edinburgh
