I've played CM/FM for a long time and always used Scarborough as my team but they've been relegated way below any playable league so I was sorta lost for a while which team to choose. After trying with several teams in the Conf North/South without getting my heart really into it I decided to move up one division and go with Aldershot Town in the Conference.
Anyhow, I was very surprised to see that they have a back-up goalkeeper from South America in their squad! How is that possible? He's got more than 1000 days left before he can gain nationality in England. He's on a three month deal. But can anyone explain how it's possible that he's been signed in the first place? It's a real player and he's been with two English clubs before he was signed by the previous manager of my team. I don't understand this.

Can he play as an amateur? I don't know English football this well, but I guess if he's an amateur player, he can play without obtaining a work permit - as long as he has a work permit for his day-to-day job.
But that's just a guess.

I think that's a very good guess! Thanks! It has to be the answer. It says "non-contract" on him when I choose the Views/Contract drop down menu and I should've guessed myself that this means he's an amateur.

The club I am managing has a Cape Verde international goalkeeper from the start. He does have Portuguese as a second nationality so the work permit is not an issue. I want to know how my team got to sign him in the first place though, as they signed him from a Portuguese club.

I think that IRL it is relatively easy for this to happen, specially in amateur leagues... the chap could be a student somewhere for example. Maybe they forged his ID too... who knows, a large number of possibilities...
I think I have seen foreigners playing in both British and continental lower leagues before though.

I remember seeing a Brazilian centre back playing for exeter in last years game. he was signed on a free after being release by Corinthians in Brazil. It's likely in these cases that the player is determined to forge a career in europe without the help of an agent but has to get a work permit and work to support himself. There is a spanish striker who played for Wrexham who did just that. He wasn't able to have a proffesional career in Spain so he moved to England and worked in a supermarket while playing for Dorchester. After one good season, Wrexham snapped him up.

My point was that this could explain why there are players from exotic countires playing at low level at the start of the game.
