How difficult is it to replace thermal compound?
Can I do it or should I leave it to a pro?
Reason being, my PC doesnt like hot weather, last summer i had my PC off for ages as it was overheating doing the simplest of things and the recent warmer weather has started it off again.
I was converting a video file for my PS3 and within two minutes my PC had overheated and stopped. I live in an attic room which is prone to getting hot, its 25C at the moment and will get hotter as it gets nearer to Aug.

check your cpu and power supply fan, check for excess dust etc that may be blocking airflow. its probably unlikely you will need to replace the thermal compound on the cpu sink.

I was looking to set up another PC in the other room that has a phone point in my house. That room just happens to be at the other side of the house so, for ease, would I be able to connect both PCs to the internet through seperate phone points at the same time?

I've never once defragmented a computer, is that bad? Upon reading this thread it seems as though it's a good thing to do. Are there any negative effects of defragging? Spoke to one of my geeky friends earlier and he said something about how it deletes obsolete folder locations which sounded scary but I didn't really understand. So yeah, essentially what I'm asking is this: if I defrag will I find all my stuff in different places or anything horrific like that? Or will it just magically make my computer all speedy and delicious?
Thanks in advance boffins! |

It doesnt delete anything. It just moves the files around on the HD so all the data is together, thus easier to access
You PC will seem abit faster for a short period, but its best to do it every now and again

"easier to access" should be "quicker to access"
