Nothing new there. What I had to buy myself on joining battalion:

Bivvy bag
Bergan
Norwegian army shirts x3
SAS smock
100% cotton socks x4
German para boots
Beret
Snake belt
Maglite
Silva compass
GS watch & cover
'44 webbing respirator pouch
Leatherman
Rifle cleaning kit
50m para cord
Bungees x8

Total cost just over a grand, or about 3 months take home wages. Though admittedly I never had to provide my own Landy or Main Battle Tank. ****ing disgrace.
