OK, this is the other show that stood out for me from this years pilots. It started on Wednesday, on NBC, following on from the truly awful Bionic Woman. Praying that doesn't drag it down, because this show could be a bit special. The first episode hit big numbers in the magic 18-49 demograph, beating out all others, including one of the ever popular CSI spin offs.
A little background....
Charlie Crews has just been released from a Federal maximum security prison after spending twelve years there for a triple murder he didn't commit. As a cop inside prison he suffered hugely, but discovered Zen to help him find balance in the Universe. Now released, and hugely rich thanks to a massive settlement for his wrongful arrest and imprisonment, he's gone back to work for the police, working alongside the people who worked hard to put him in prison. What they don't know is that Charlie is slowly working out who framed him, and why.
At the end of the episode, we saw Charlie looking at a massive board, piecing together all the information he has, trying to work it all out. Obviously this is going to be a huge part of the show. NBC have also made all of this information available to us, so we can work alongside Charlie. ARG's are becoming more and more a part of television nowadays, and this one could be quite good. Click.
So, ideas and theories here, and lets hope it can keep it's numbers up.
All this 'extra' stuff is fine and dandy for the American audience keeping up with it 'live' but it's a bit rubbish for the rest of us 3/6/12 months down the line.
I still come back to the point that a show should stand up for itself on the merits of what’s in each main episode. By all means have add-ons and extras to build more of a 'universe' around the show - and I can see why the networks want to go down that route - but please, as much as possible don't make them a necessity in order to enjoy / understand the programme. There’s always going to be a & of people willing to buy into the extras and immerse themselves in it, but I’m sure the majority just want to watch 45 mins of TV a week – if they feel they’re missing out on stuff there’s a good chance they’ll simply switch off…hopefully the networks will see this and back off on the interactivity stuff a bit.
These are just that James, extras. I fought with everyone to have the Heroes stuff recognised as something else, but this time I concede, these are optional extras.
Unfortunately, no-one in the UK has picked up Life yet. Might be a long wait, although if it continues to boast high numbers in the key 18-49 demo, then it should end up somewhere before long.
The longer arc, about the crime Charlie was convicted of, is shaping up rather nicely. A decent contained story too. Tina and Gina were a plus, looks like that sort of thing will become common place, and "Olivia" sure looks different to the other time I've seen her, on Mad Men. Nice to see his love affair with fruit continuing too.
This of course followed on from Bionic Woman, which again posted strangely huge numbers. While I can understand it appealing to some folks (I'll bet Gudge will enjoy the images of Miss Ryan doing chin ups, soaked in sweat, with just a sports bra on, with a "top down" camera angle to increase cleavage view) I don't understand just how no-one has spotted that it's utter dross. However, if it continues then I guess a knock on effect is more folks may watch Life, so that's a welcome bonus.
sounds like something i would like, however i need to finish watching season 6 of 24, season 2 of prison break and start on season 3 before i start watching anything else new
Perhaps, but the magic 18-49 demo is hugely important for American broadcasters. Each 18-49 viewer is worth four viewers from any other demo, from an advertising pov, so hitting the big numbers in the 18-49 demo means a show is much more likely to stay on the air.
And np Sheer Class, I like to think I have good taste in TV, sci-fi aside
