but if not, just about to buy my first slr, probably the 400d. i know aslan got persuaded to get the 30d (in the old thread) but i reckon the 400d will be everything i really need or want in the near future

anyone else picked one up recently/getting one for christmas?

You have probably read a post from me on one of the other threads, but I'm doing photography as an A-level, currently in my 2nd year.

I brought the 400D for £500 last christmas which is ideal. Been seeing them for around £400 now. You really dont need anything more then a 400D if its just a hobby.

I currently work as a wedding photography every saturday using my 400D with a Canon EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM lens and speedlite 550EX flash gun.

I would definitely recommend the 400D.
