While none of us want another distaster I think something like a TAL (Transoceanic Abort Landing ) would possibly the coolest thing ever ever to see. Basically the shuttle goes up - (they find a problem) and so it heads straight back around and lands somewhere in Europe :cool:

No don't think it has Paul. Theres another plan where if there is a very sudden emergency they basically turn it around immediatly and it lands at the same place it took off.
But apparently its so dangerous no-one wants to even practice it. \o/

The documentary on Apollo 11 aswell revealed that the astronauts were told in an emergency, they could just eject out of the shuttle into safety. In reality this would never have worked tho as they didnt have enough time to eject. Nasa knew but didnt tell them
