I`ve got a 400D with a Tamron AF18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical. The zoom is good, but you need a stand to keep it still from mid zoom onwards.
I`ve got a Fujii S5000 and a credit card sized little caon (can`t remember what the model is) if I`m needing something smaller.
I`d recommend getting a fairly cheap camera to start off with and learning about what makes a good photo. It doesn`t matter how good the camera is, if you can`t see what makes a picture then there is no point spending the cash.
I concentrate on nature photography, hence the big zoom. Going hillwalking often means you see things from a distance so the zoom with a portable stand works a treat.
For practice, take a very ordinary everyday scene and take multiple pictures to see what works. Something as silly as a lamppost taken at different angles against sky or against architecture is good for practice.

talked to my course instructor, told me I'd grow out of a 400d in a year and to get a 30d. They're a bout 500 euro dearer, less meagpixels, no dust cleaning lens, dont' think I'm sold.
Any opinions??????

I am tempted to go for the Panasonic fz8. £299 in jessops but from www.buyacamera.co.uk it is only £189 and I have had dealings with the company before and I like them. Just have to read a few reviews of the camera before I make my mind up.
Just a general question, but would it be better going for a camera with say 8-9 m.pixels or would one with 6-7 be just as worthwhile? Im guessing it is more to do with the lens and camera quality than the amount of pixels

| Its a bit of both really. Having loads of pixels and a crap lense is pointless and vice versa. Just have a look on some of the review sites like DP Review and see which have the best of both worlds. It sometimes depends on what you intend on photographing as well.
