I'm looking for a new digital camera for around £100. I want optical zoom and a good quality picture, not bothered about movies etc. I'm thinking of the Canon PowerShot A550 - Anyone know anything about this camera / have any suggestions for a decentish camera for around £100?

I know I didn't really give anyone time to reply but I've made up my mind and gone for the A560 since it has the DIGIC III processor rather than the DIGIC II and I've read that that's better.

I'm getting a SanDisk Extreme III 2 GB SD Card to go with it as it has fast transfer rates.

It should hopefully perform a fair bit better and faster than my 4 year old 3 MPix camera.

I bought a Canon EOS 350d SLR Digital before I went on holiday. Despite my arty background, I've never owned a camera before now.

It's an awesome camera. I'd never consider buying a compact digital now I've used it and seen the results.

I think you have it backwards there. The smaller the aperture, the greater the depth of field and vice versa. But just to make it interesting, the larger the f-number, the smaller the aperture is.

Yeah, that's where my confusion came from - I realised a couple of days later, but just hoped no one would notice!!
More pics on my Flickr now.

yeah that f-number/aperture thing confuses me all the time, which is bad seeing as i've done loads of optics and know equations that work out f-numbers and apertures and focal lengths and stuff. probably why i got a 2.2 really.

like the ones from the 23rd of camden btw, wp.

sent it, never heard from them again. if i see it turn up somewhere on a website then i will either feel smug or annoyed depending on circumstances but oh well, not too fussed, i'd be baffled if anyone tried to rob it and make money off it or something, simply not that good a photo in any way shape or form imo.
