Sunday Mirror -PHILLIPS COULD GO FOR JUST £2m Jun 1 2003
SUNDERLAND are prepared to offload star striker Kevin Phillips for as little as £2million.
The Black Cats are £26.6m in debt and are desperate to cut costs following relegation from the Premiership. Manager Mick McCarthy publicly values his prize asset at around £4m, but Sunderland are yet to receive any firm offers and have privately admitted that they will be forced to accept a much lower price.
A bidding war between Middlesbrough and Tottenham could push the fee up, but otherwise Phillips, 29, could be available for a fraction of the £11m he was worth just two years ago.
"Although the figures being talked about are £4m-£5m, in the current market they could accept as little as £2m," a source revealed.
McCarthy is targeting Republic of Ireland central defender Gary Breen as his first summer signing. But he won't make his move until he has unloaded some of the cash-strapped club's big-name stars.
