Default lcd monitor troubles, which to buy?

hey all. right, i recently bought a new pc, just a base unit. i was going to use my old vga monitor while i shopped around for a decent lcd. but unfortunately, the vga doesnt connect to it! the vga port has a plate screwed over it which says do not remove, which i of course did, tried it and nothing happens. so i assume the vga port isnt connected inside. there is a port in the pc labeled lcd, quite wide with lots of small square holes, and also a port labeled hdmi, quite small, similar to a usb. so wat monitor do i buy that is compatible??
thanks in advance

Look in your motherboard box for a VGA to DVI adapter.
