Erm the general rule is that if it is described as a Cable/DSL router, it will not connect directly to an ADSL line. You would need an external Ethernet ADSL modem for a Cable/DSL router to work on ADSL in the UK.

| Whereas and adsl router has a built in modem that connects directly to the adsl line.

Consider yourself lucky | Really? Cool. I help write the programs they use to test the routers

Can I just plug the router into the phone socket, and then the other 3 pc's connect to it wireless? What about my existing modem, do I have to use this to connect the router or something?

If you buy an adsl wireless router then there is no use for your exsisting modem (apart from being a backup for access to internet if your router fails) as the router will have an adsl modem built in.
Yes you can wirelessly connect your 3 pc's to the router but i'd strongly advice against doing that, at least one should be connected to the router directly with ethernet cable because if the wireless connection stopped working you wouldn't be able to access the router setup page.

And what is the router set up page? Also, is it difficult to configure the built in firewall, any examples of how I would do this? When I install the router, is it just a straight forward kind of thing or involve a lot of messin about in certain settings?

The router setup page is basically where you configure settings for router i.e. enabling/disabling wireless function, setting firewall, entering your ISP settings so you can access the internet and many other settings.
Each routers setup page is different and how to access setup page and what each settings do will be in the user guide that comes with router.
