Just got back from seeing "Death From Above 1979" at the London Scala. What can I say? What an amazing gig. I enjoyed all three bands, and main support "Metric" were amazing.
The opening band were called "Test Icicles", who were rather fun, never laughed so much at a gig. Great crowd interaction and fun songs, every song was different varying from The Rapture, Blood Brothers, Death From Above 1979, Bloc Party, Beatie Boys and even Slipknot.
It would have been better though if:
a) The bass wasn't just sampled.
b) The guitar was actually plugged in to the sound system, and not a little amp, "miming" if thats the write word along the the guitar rifts, I looked real enough but you could tell it wasn't "live".
c) And the drummer actually drummed.
It sounds bad, as no one was really "playing", and they just went into some random raps at points, but it was hilarious and really good fun. So for the fun factor 7/10.
Next on were a band called "Metric", woman singer dressed up smartly singing, playing keyboard and triggering samples, and the bassist and guitarist word indentical suits which I hated, but still.
The first song did not impress me at all, but after that they were just amazing and got the whole place livened up ready for DFA1979. If I was to describe them I guess the best anology I can come up with at the moment is "Elastica meets The Bravery (with talent)". A lot of the guitar rifts and drumming was similar to the Bravery. At the end I totally loved this band. 9/10.
While waiting for "DFA1979" I went and purchased the "Metric" album as well as getting a DFA1979 black t-shirt, total cost £25!
Next was to wait for what we came here for "Death From Above 1979". I was three rows from the front towards the left right in front of the speakers. When DFA first started playing the sound seemed terrible and I could not seem to make anything out. They opened with "Turn it out". After the first couple of songs the sound improved considerably, and the whole place was heaving, I have't jumped and sweated so much at a gig for quite a few years.
Some girl next to me dropped her mobile phone and I was trying to help her find it, but to no avail, with the crowd moving there was no chance. Oh well..
Early on there was no security to catch crowd surfers and one guy went straight of the front crashing head first into the stage, looked quite painful
Romantic Rights were supurb live as well as Youre a Woman I'm a Machine.
For the encore the first band "Test Icicles" joined them on and the drummer singer from "DFA1979" stated some stupid some about "what if David Beckham brought out a record", was strange, then they kicked off into to some songs I didn't recoginse.
All in all a really fun, amazing gig and I'm so glad I went. 9/10
