real top quality first half - and we've absolutely dominated. questions should be asked of nigeria though tbh - for a side so highly ranked/rated, they've been completely outplayed by a side missing its entire first choice midfield and strikeforce. also wondering why rob baan hasn't been considered for the national role. | Doesn't want it. He only filled in because Arnie was looking after the U-23s and Advocaat was meant to be finishing things up in St Petersburg.
Klinsmann was mentioned in the radio this morning, but I doubt that he would come to coach the 'Roos. Ange Postecouglou made the point on Offsiders this morning that Australia only offers about A$300K per annum, and that's insufficient to entice the top drawer coaches.
And Lucas Neill wants somebody appointed pronto.

I can't see Klinsmann doing it.
I think his name is mentioned as a reflection of there not being many top managers available.
It is tempting to wait till after Euro 2008 to see if there are more candidates available. It seems there are managers that specialise at international football.
If we waited, a caretaker coach would need to manage for 4 fixtures in the third round. And the new manager would have his first match in September.

Also I think it depends on how hard our first Asian qualifying group is.
If it looks a really hard group. Then I think there will be more urgency.
If it is an easier group, then there might be a temptation to wait.

It's ridiculous offering 300k Australian and expecting top quality coaches.
Australia does not need a "coach" it needs someone to manage the national teams, put the effort in, and if it takes a 4-5 year 2 million a year contract then it should be done.
Would a regular large business looking for an executive to run their company be able to attract quality for 300k? No way.

| i think it's safe to say we're offering substantially more than 300k. i doubt advocaat would've even spoken to us if that was the amount on the table.

I saw the draw on SBS. The discussion about it was interesting.
They were saying that we got the toughest group. And it is important that we get a new coach quickly.
The Away games will be hard because Iraq/Qatar will be played in extreme heat. China will be cold.
The first two games will have A League players. And it will be important that we get a good start.
February 6 - Qatar (Home)
March 26 - China (Away)
They said that with the tough draw. A manager with Asian experience is important. And the willingness to be based in Australia so they can train the A League players for the first two games.
SBS mentioned Verbeek and Trousier as probably the main candidates. But Trousier is currently with some African side.
Also possibly other managers with Asian experience like the former Iraq Manager.

Is Neeskens still being talked up? At least he has some familiarity with the players, though really we need someone who knows the A-League, since that's where the players for the early qualifiers will be coming from. Actually, that's a huge concern given the quality of games lately...
