everyone think we will still qualify?
oh and ... bring back frank farina, for the sole reason that he will play zullo and kruse in the national team.
| It's really not too bad a group. China are rubbish. Possible the worst second seed after Kuwait. Iraq are good but I don't know how they've been playing lately. Qatar shouldn't be a problem. With your European-based players you would qualify with ease. Not sure about your A-league ones though. And of course June games could be big problem. </BLOCKQUOTE>
The A-League players will comprise the bulk of the squad for the first couple of qualifiers, I think. Iraq gave us a hiding in the Asian Cup, IIRC. But we really should be qualifying out of this group, if we're serious about being good on the world stage.

Yeah I think a couple of the Iraqi players have run away, or quit the team, and no idea what their form's been like with the new coach (apart from crushing Pakistan who were ****ed off they couldn't bat and bowl).

Not that stoked on Verbeek (who, let's face it, has had a few weird moments over his career), but prepared to reserve judgement until I see his teams playing. He has experience in Asia though, and I see it as more a continuation of the FFA trying to cement the dutch influence in the game atm.

Socceroos dates changed - EXCLUSIVE - Scott McIntyre
The Socceroos' rocky road to South Africa has become even tougher, with FIFA and the AFC set to alter the match dates for the third stage of qualifying - meaning Pim Verbeek's side will have to play four matches in the space of just three weeks in June.
The original fixture list had a home clash with Qatar on February 6 next year, followed by a trip to China on March 26, and then double dates, home and away, in June and September.
The first two dates will remain unchanged, but the program thereafter is dramatically altered. The World Game can reveal the Socceroos will host Iraq on June 2, and then visit a venue the Iraq FA nominates, likely Jordan, the UAE or Syria, just five days later.
A week after that, on June 14, the side will travel to Qatar before returning to Australia for the final fixture on June 21.
Outside of obvious issues with travel and a hectic match program, the new fixture list also throws up several other problems - primarily asking the European-based Socceroos to largely miss their off-season for the fifth consecutive year.

I actually think it suits Australia. According to the article, we now play our last four group games in June.
It means they can have a long camp with the European players to prepare. Just like preparing for a tournament.
It all happens in one go. They can build momentum rather than having to fly back to Australia in September with short preparation time.
