Took me ages to get into Blacklight, but now really like it. Lyrics be damned, the songs remain in my head in a good way.

Pocket Symphony second best album Air have done as well. Not sure on the uniform blandness front. Yes it's obvious they are all Air tunes (if that's waht you mean), but that's been the way since they started. Somewhere between walking and sleeping, Left Bank and Napalm Love so far removed from bland for me.

Or maybe not, goddamn it. I mean, just take one gilded listen to this thing: it's lush and beautiful and has harps and strings and is, pretty much, the first consummate collection of material that Jens has put out. It isn't just a bunch of songs. Night Falls Over Kortedala is the realisation and refinement of an aesthetic and that same sense of stylistic mastery can be palpably and intimately felt in the record's seamless blend of live instrumentation and crackled samples, its warm enveloping sound, or just in the way Jens starts off with the Walker Brothers ("And I Remember Every Kiss") before doubling up with his heart beating like Ringo ("Friday Night At The Drive-In Bingo").

When that aesthetic is paired with equally-convincing songwriting, the results are, unsurprisingly, amazing: the idle table taps introducing "Postcard to Nina" perfectly capture the song's droll happiness, its lumbering bass anchoring the escalating horns before they border on the unreasonable.
This is not me.

And Herman, perhaps I'm too wedded to the unpolished Jenny Lewis lyrics of their earlier work, if you ever have a chance look at their Initial Friend EP and listen to Always, you can hear the difference immediately.

Moon Safari and even Talkie-Walkie always made me feel as if I was transplanted into somewhere else. Mostly France, as Ce Matin La did, sometimes Japan, but even if, in retrospect, these images were sometimes nothing more than plucked out of my ass it always seemed as if Air was bringing me somewhere. New one doesn't bring up any of the some emotions.

CokeMachineGlow spot on as usual.

A Postcard to Nina is a great song, but Friday Night at the Drive in Bingo is still my favourite.

Always is a tremendous song. Not desputing the lyrics have change, or even lost, focus. But they still write damn fine tunes, which is all good for me.

I guess albums are personal things as well. Talkie Walkie didn't do much for me after a while. Didn't seem to work as a whole, but rather just had a few standout moments. Think Pocket Symphony hits a mood and sticks with it, which would be similar to what you are talking about. Worked for me, didn't for you, but both seem to be looking for the same thing. That's the bloody French for you I guess.
