Gary *Toner* of the Seattle Mariners cruised to American League Player of the Week honors after putting together one of the finest stretches in his career last week.
The center fielder batted .409 (9-22) with 4 home runs, 6 RBIs and 7 runs scored.

Nick *Carter* of the San Francisco Giants blanked Arizona 5-0 on a 5-hit complete game shutout, striking out 9 batters and walking 1.

*Boskovic* Out 1-2 Weeks with Injury
A blow for Daniel *Boskovic* today -- team doctors confirmed he will miss 1-2 weeks with dead arm syndrome. *Boskovic* suffered the injury throwing a pitch. Although officials from the Colorado Rockies are confident he'll make a full recovery, doubts will persist about *Boskovic*'s ability to return fully fit this year with an injury of this nature.

Medic! Chris *Porter* Suffers Injury
Chris *Porter* and the Atlanta Braves got a bad break in today's game against the Giants as the team confirmed he will miss 7 months with a ruptured ulnar collateral ligament (elbow). The Braves starting pitcher suffered the injury throwing a pitch. The team doctor is confident he'll make a full recovery.

Watching Gaz *Squire* getting helped off the field today at Dodger Stadium, fans of the Los Angeles Dodgers feared the worst. The news wasn't quite as bad as initially feared, but the starting pitcher will miss 5 weeks with a hyperextended elbow. "We feel we've dodged a bullet. When you see a guy break down like that, you worry right away," a team spokesman said. *Squire* suffered the injury throwing a pitch in the game against the Padres.

Major League Baseball News: First-Year Player Draft
Scrutiny begins early in the life of an amateur baseball player. Very likely it started while he was in high school. Scouts have traveled many miles to come up with a portfolio of players who have the potential to play in Major League Baseball. It all comes to fruition on rookie draft day. It's a crapshoot. Baltimore, Kansas City, Colorado, Chicago and Philadelphia will have the first five cracks at hitting the jackpot this year. According to most baseball analysts, these 10 draftees are most likely to be chosen in the early rounds:

2. Ethan López, 16 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school.

San Francisco Starter Named NL's #1 Pitcher
Nick *Carter* of San Francisco had an outstanding May and was chosen the Pitcher of the Month in the National League. He topped off the month with a 4-0 mark and 0.60 ERA in 6 starts, tossed 45 innings, fanned 51 and held opposing teams to a .161 average.

The National League Batter of the Month has been selected for May, and the award went to the standout Pittsburgh catcher Iain *Bartholomew*. He posted a .402 batting average with 39 hits in 97 at-bats, 9 home runs, 31 RBIs, 18 walks, 22 runs scored, and a .491 OBP.
During the month, the Seattle center fielder hit .389 with 13 home runs, 24 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

It seemed that Tampa Bay second baseman Jonno *Blood* could do no wrong as the Devil Rays kayoed the Nationals 10-5 today as he rapped out 5 hits in 5 at-bats. Washington pitchers couldn't get him out as *Blood* seemed to know which pitches they were throwing.
"I think the Devil Rays were stealing signs." growled one unhappy Washington fan.
"I just felt good today. I saw the ball well and just wanted to make good contact and put the ball in play." exclaimed the jubilant *Blood* in the postgame press interview.
J. *Blood* singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 8th.

It's always a thrill for fans of the team and students of the game alike, when a superstar in the making shows what he's got. Iain *Bartholomew*, the Pittsburgh Pirates 21-year-old catcher, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for National League Player of the Week honors.
He ripped 13 hits in 26 at-bats, compiling a .500 average with 2 home runs and 12 RBI.

*Marshall* Earns June's Top Batter Prize in AL
One of the more consistent batters in June, Kansas City first baseman James *Marshall* grabbed American League Batter of the Month honors by swatting a stout .404 with 38 hits in 94 at-bats.
He racked up 10 home runs and 27 RBIs, scored 36 runs, and took 28 walks to put up a .545 on-base percentage.
