Lord Grantchester has denied Everton director Paul Gregg's claims that he is the man behind a bid to pump £15 million into the ailing Merseyside club.

Gregg (pictured) was angered on Friday by chairman Bill Kenwright's refusal to respond to the offer, which included the proviso that the present board was replaced.

"I'm a lifelong Evertonian and I share the deep frustration and disappointment with the supporters," he said in a statement to Sky Sports News.

"It's not the case that I am behind Mr Gregg's proposal to underwrite the club - and I have not seen the proposal.

"All this can't be helpful to David Moyes as he prepares the team for the start of the season."
