The annual USL meetings wrap up tomorrow. There's a hot rumor that a Florida team (or perhaps a Cary, N.C. team operated by the guys who run Rochester) will be coming in to replace Richmond as the 12th team in USL-1.
The Florida team is rumored to be a revival of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers (former NASL team that George Best and Peruvian legend Teofilo Cubillas played for). Even more intriguing (at least to PMLF ) is that there might be a Brazilian group behind it.

I don't.
Although some Rochester supporters say the Rhinos GM told them that it's Miami (which wasn't the rumored Brazilians)
Although the Rhinos GM also told them apparently a group from Haiti is interested in joining the league. :o

A Brazilian-sponsored/controlled team like that would make far more sense in Miami (where there is the biggest Brazilian community in the USA) than in Ft. Lauderlade.
But regardless of where the team will be located in and who will control it, it doesn`t look like a smart idea to have a new Florida team so soon after the Miami and Tampa Bay (more or less) recent fiascos.

That bit about an MLS package makes more sense after this New York Times story: Quote:
By THE NEW YORK TIMES
Published: November 3, 2005
ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC Sports yesterday announced their acquisition of the television rights to the next two World Cups and Women's World Cups through 2014 for an estimated $100 million. Univision said it would pay $325 million for the Spanish-language rights. The total is 123 percent above what FIFA, soccer's world governing body, received for the 2002 and 2006 World Cup rights in the United States.

NBC Universal and Telemundo, its Spanish-language network, made a pre-emptive bid of $333 million ($275 million of it for the Spanish-language rights), which one FIFA committee accepted. But FIFA's executive committee opened the auction at the request of Chuck Blazer, the only American on the powerful executive committee, who wanted bidders to include a rights deal for Major League Soccer. It was Telemundo's rich bid that induced Univision to go far beyond the $150 million that it paid for the 2002-6 cycle of World Cup rights.
M.L.S.'s deals with Univision and ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC are not complete, but they would represent upfront money. "We're very far along in our negotiations, but not at the point where numbers are being thrown around," said Don Garber, the league's commissioner.
While ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC are M.L.S.'s incumbent networks, the league has not had a Spanish-language network carry its games since 2001, when Telemundo had the rights.
| Finally, FIFA's working for us. |
