I have these speakers, bought them about 3 years ago and think they are great but it is more than your budget
http://www.laserline.uk.net/product_info.php?cPath=1639...STuIwCFQWIlAody1CU0A

I can't really say what speakers are good etc you have to hear them really or try get a short list of the ones you like and read lots of reviews on them as some reviews are biased towards vertan companies.

Kef, mission or Harman you can't go wrong really and get Denon, yamahama, Harman or Marantz amp.
I think this amp is good value http://www.petertyson.co.uk/ebuttonz/ebz_product_pages/..._avr1707.shtml?gshop

along with these spakers http://www.petertyson.co.uk/ebuttonz..._efx5.1.shtml#

Some magazines give decent reviews to products to get freebies so it is always best to buy a few magazines write up a short list and do a search on the av forum see if anyone has the product you want to buy and if they have had any problems with it and what they think of it.
Better still listen to the speakers yourself then buy them on line.

Dumb question but do the speakers plug in through the amp (is a receiver the same as an amp?) then from the amp into the TV? If so is it important to get an amp/receiver with an HDMI output for the sound.

You need an amp to connect the speakers and the amp decodes the sound into 5.1 or DTS.
If people are on a tight budget try these

Tony - What speaker/amp combo would you recommend for a budget up to £1000ish?

There's quite a selection of decent kit around at that price. I'd probably be looking to spend £450 on the amp and a little more on the speakers.

This is an update of my amp, and will do you a great job when paired with these speakers.

I have these. They're amazing speakers for the money, but the Kef's above are probably a better deal.

Some dvd players do the decoding themselves, but a dedicated amp will do a far, far better job.

But something like I've linked to above, and settle down to watch Company of Heroes and you'll know you've made a wise investment.

Cheers they look very nice. I know that most of the speakers come with a subwoofer, i take it the amp is a replacement for the subwoofer? Also do either of the above speaker sets have wireless rear speakers or does wireless compromise too much in quality?

Looking for a LCD tv, around the €700 mark, that will suit my 360 and PS3 gaming expierences, and also look good when playing blu-ray dvds. Will probably order off Komplett, anything strike you there as good value?

Cheers.
