Painful side effects sideline Frei

BV Borussia Dortmund and Switzerland forward Alexander Frei will be out until "the second half of the season" as he awaits an operation on his right calf.

The 28-year-old has been unable to play all season after scoring 16 goals in 32 Bundesliga games for Dortmund last term. In the summer, he underwent surgery on a hip problem, but the resulting adjustments have placed additional strain on his right calf, prompting a number of minor tears as he has attempted to regain fitness. "At the beginning of next week, Alex will undergo surgery," said Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc. "We hope he will be back for the second half of the season." Frei will miss UEFA EURO 2008™ co-host Switzerland's next friendly against Nigeria in Zurich on 20 November.
