Karlsruhe suffer Miller setback

Karlsruher SC's hopes of continuing their fine start to the Bundesliga season following promotion took a blow today when goalkeeper Markus Miller was ruled out for six months with a knee injury.

Confirmation
The 25-year-old ruptured cruciate ligaments during Saturday's goalless draw at FC Hansa Rostock, a result which kept Karlsruhe in fourth place in the table. An x-ray confirmed the club's fears about their ever-present keeper, and Miller will be replaced by Frenchman Jean-François Kornetzky for tomorrow's German Cup tie against VfL Wolfsburg.

Frings resigned to more time off

Torsten Frings is gearing himself up for another absence after tests showed the Werder Bremen midfielder has sustained another injury to his left knee.

Painful reminder
The 31-year-old German international picked up a knee injury in a pre-season game in July which kept him out of action until October, but seemed to be returning to full fitness until he felt pain in the joint during the weekend's 1-1 draw at FC Schalke 04. "I had pain during the match against Schalke but had not had any problems before," he explained.

Unknown period
Bremen team doctor Götz Dimanski has ordered Frings to rest after conducting examinations but is yet to decide how long the player will be absent from the squad. "An examination has now revealed I had been carrying a knee injury without knowing it," said Frings. "It's really unlucky and a very bitter blow for me because I had been getting back on track."

Third place
Frings has played in three Bundesliga games and two more in the UEFA Champions League season. Bremen are third in the German league and also third in Group C in Europe's top club competition following their 2-1 Matchday 3 win at home against S.S. Lazio. They meet the Rome side again in Italy in their next UEFA Champions League fixture on 6 November.
