Å*imůnek checks in at Wolfsburg

VfL Wolfsburg have signed one of the Czech Republic's most talented young footballers, AC Sparta Praha central defender Jan Å*imůnek, in a deal reportedly worth €5m.

World Cup
The 20-year-old has moved to the Bundesliga club on a contract until 2011, having been part of the Czech squad that finished runners-up to Argentina at the recent FIFA U-20 World Cup. He had previously represented his country at U19 and U17 levels. Å*imůnek made his Sparta debut in May 2005 against FK Mladá Boleslav, but only established himself while on loan at SK Kladno last term. Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath, who was keen to bring in a centre-back with Ricardo Costa injured, said: "We're happy to sign a player with such a bright future."

Stuttgart and Schalke secure duo

VfB Stuttgart and FC Schalke 04 are continuing to prepare for the UEFA Champions League by handing new deals to Thomas Hitzlsperger and Christoph Pander respectively.

'Important'
Bundesliga champions Stuttgart have rewarded the 25-times capped Hitzlsperger with a two-year extension to his contract until 2010. The 25-year-old has been back in Germany since leaving Aston Villa FC in 2005 and has scored nine goals in 57 league games. Stuttgart sporting director Horst Heldt said: "Last season everyone was able to see just how important he has become. We are very pleased Thomas has chosen to continue and we expect much in the future."

'Skilled'
Schalke, who finished runners-up to Stuttgart but will also enter the UEFA Champions League group stage, have secured the services of left-back Pander until 2011. The 24-year-old, with three goals in 41 Bundesliga outings, only had a year left on his deal. Club coach Mirko Slomka said: "He is extraordinarily skilled and is a very important performer as well as someone who is ready to play for Germany.“ The player himself added: "I rose through the ranks and have spent many years here. It was clear that I would first talk to Schalke and to Schalke only."

Boka leaves Stuttgart short

VfB Stuttgart left-back Arthur Boka may miss the start of the UEFA Champions League after tearing knee ligaments in training.

Training injury
The 24-year-old Ivory Coast defender has damaged ligaments in his left knee and has been ruled out of action for up to a month, meaning he may be unavailable for the German champions when the group stage campaign begins in mid-September. Boka played in Stuttgart's opening Bundesliga game of the season, a 2-2 draw against last season's runners-up FC Schalke 04 on Friday. Stuttgart have received better news with Turkey midfielder Yıldıray Baştürk returning to full training after recovering from a pulled muscle. He joined the club from Hertha BSC Berlin this summer.

Josué joy at Wolfsburg move

Copa América winner Josué has earned a move to European football after VfL Wolfsburg agreed an undisclosed fee with his Brazilian club São Paulo FC.

'Grateful'
Felix Magath was able to acquire the midfielder's services on a four-year deal despite Josué still having a year to run on his contract. "I am grateful that my club respected my wish to play in Europe," said Josué, who has spent his entire career in his homeland. The 28-year-old has seven international appearances including five at the summer tournament in Venezuela, when he also scored his first goal for Brazil. The move comes after Wolfsburg acquired AC Sparta Praha central defender Jan Å*imůnek, in a deal reportedly worth €5m, yesterday.

Schalke strengthen their midfield

Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04 have added an Uruguayan international to their squad just a few days into the new Bundesliga season.

Carlos Grossmüller (born 4 May 1983) joins the Royal Blues from Uruguayan champions Danubio FC with immediate effect.

The midfielder put pen to paper on a four-year contract on Monday. Capped seven times for his country, Grossmüller will wear the number 21 shirt for the Royal Blues.

12 goals last season

"Carlos is a versatile midfielder who showed his attacking qualities with an impressive 12-goal haul last season", said head coach Mirko Slomka.

"This was the kind of quality we were looking for, which is why I'm delighted the transfer has worked out. The addition of Grossmüller to our squad gives us even more flexibility."

He is very good (not world class though). He is one of those defensive mifielders that can perform attacking roles very well (segundo volante, as we call it in Brazil).
