Top 10 Reasons to buy a wii

#10: The Wiimote:
The Nintendo Wii's controller, affectionately called the Wiimote by nearly every print and online publication, will start this countdown. It is the spirit of Nintendo's outlook for the future of the game industry. Because Nintendo sees interactivity to be paramount in the next generation, other companies have been jumping on the "motion sensor/gyro" bandwagon.

Although Sony revealed their gyroscope controller at E3 2006, their testing of the technology had been tucked in the closet. Bringing it out at E3 only demonstrated their intention to follow Nintendo in the "touch" (or at least, tilt) direction. Even Microsoft's Vice President Peter Moore stated that he admired Nintendo's strategy with the upcoming Wii and, though he only hints at it, there might be another 360 controller in the works that follows Nintendo's example.

While Nintendo is trend setting with controllers like the Wiimote and, to a lesser extent, the nunchaku dongle, other companies will be following along. Nintendo's game plan from the genesis of the Wii has been touch and gamer-friendly games. They see the future of gaming in the Wiimote. Everyone else, at this point, seems to be just catching up

#9: Red Steel:
With hit-and-miss attention for Ubisoft's freshman Wii attempt Red Steel, popularity and hype for the title began to sink. But with recent hands-on demos showing some real promise - and some sweet sword and hand-to-hand fighting - the game has come back into the limelight.

Red Steel at first presented itself as a first person shooter, with the player taking the role of a nameless American man amidst a conflict with Yakuzas, but it is much more than just that. With the Wiimote letting you aim your gun or fist or sword you'll instantly notice this interaction offers to gamers something that no other game can yet offer: Immersion. That is, this nameless American's struggle becomes your struggle.

The game features traditional firepower - pistols, machine pistols (or Uzis), and pump-action shotguns - as well as swords like the Katana and Wakizashi, or even your own bloody knuckles. Early impressions put the guns below the swords and bare fists on ease of use, but Ubisoft has time to revise and tweak the control scheme. At present, Red Steel is looking red hot.

#8: WarioWare: Smooth Moves:
This nomination wouldn't have anything to do with a certain yellow badguy's appearance in a certain Smash Bros. update, would it? Course not. What is a launch without Wario? It seems the canary-framed villain is getting more face time than even his star-catching counterpart. And with hits like WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ on the GameBoy and WarioWare Touched on the DS, it's natural that he makes it to the Wii.

WarioWare: Smooth Moves for the Wii is focusing on taking the interactivity of the Wiimote to a new level. By interlacing the simple, addictive gameplay from previous WarioWares and the various ways that gamers can hold the Wiimote, Smooth Moves lets you chop barrels, turn levers, run races and more in a whole new way. WarioWare: Smooth Moves just noses out Red Steel for #8 because it will be the means by which gamers experience the flexibility the Wii remote allows.

#7: Wii Sports:
Sure, you've heard about it, and now you want to swing the invisible baseball bat for yourself. Wii Sports titles are going to reinvent the sports game - or at least any sports game where you swing something. Wii Sports, which is scheduled to release alongside the system, contains Wii Baseball, Wii Tennis, Wii Golf, and a slightly abstract version of Pilotwings called Wii Airplane.

Finally, hitting the ball will be more than just a button press. With the Wii's wonderful ability to sense the speed and ferocity of a swing you can't just whiff the controller like you don't care either. Speed and accuracy is determined by how hard and how smooth you swing, while the where the ball goes is about timing (in the case of baseball and tennis, anyway). The game took a little getting used to at E3, but once you got the hang of it even the mighty Top Spin franchise looks primitive.

While the less talked about Wii Airplane doesn't really get our attention the way the other games in the group do, we're still excited to see what it's all about. First impressions show that you'll be using the pitch of the Wiimote to dive and climb the airplane (or Wiiplane) and trying to direct the Wiiplane through rings, presumably to amass points or clear levels.

#6: Virtual Console:
Taking key points from the success of the XBox 360's XBox Live Marketplace, Nintendo will bring a similar service called the Virtual Console to all Wii gamers with internet access. The Virtual Console will be a massive, game distributing marketplace where gamers can download classics from the NES, SNES, and even N64 heydays. One of Nintendo's biggest announcements this year was the inclusion of Sega Genesis games and NEC's TurboGrafx 16 for the Virtual Console lineup. That in itself is amazing.

We know that many games from these popular consoles will be available on the Wii, but not all. Nintendo has yet to confirm the entire lineup. Super Mario Bros. on NES has been confirmed, as has Super Mario World on SNES and Super Mario 64 on Nintendo 64. From Genesis, Sonic the Hedgehog will, of course, make his appearance and from TurboGrafx 16, Bonk, R-Type, and New Adventure Island have all been confirmed.

The Virtual Console has the potential to easily oust Microsoft's XBox Live Arcade as the foremost provider of classic (and budget) videogames.

#5: EA's Heavy-Hitting Third Party Support:
Though often regarded as a behemoth developer (and not in a good way), EA has shown a lot of character with their mammoth support for the Wii system. Furthermore, I'm not sure that Nintendo could pull out in the lead of Microsoft and Sony without support from one of the world's biggest developers.

With a hefty lineup for the Wii already announced, EA is leading the pack. With the likes of Harry Potter, Madden NFL 07, Medal of Honor: Airborne, Need for Speed Carbon, SSX (Wii), The Godfather, a next-gen Simpsons title, and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 alone from this one company, things are looking very good for Wii third party titles.

Skeptics have been all over Nintendo after their lackluster third party support during the Nintendo 64 and, more recently, the GameCube. While both of these systems were very successful with their first party games, the games other companies were making were not cutting it. Releases were sparse and gamers sought first party titles as the last remaining Nintendo haven. Not with the Wii. Wii support has already been tremendous and there are tons of games in the works.

#4: Super Smash Bros. Brawl:
I couldn't merely say "Nintendo's First Party Games" could I? Super Smash Bros. Brawl has been on everybody's To-Play list ever since so secretly announced at E3 06. There is so little we know about the game and yet, because the game is so simple, we can mostly fill in the blanks of what we don't know. While graphical enhancements are probable, the most important changes are to the lineup. The lesser-known Meta Knight, who has appeared alongside Kirby and Pit from Kid Icarus, join the mayhem along with the better known Wario from WarioWare Inc. And, of course, there's the newcomer Solid Snake from Metal Gear fame.

And what would be Smash Bros. without the traditional lineup of Mario, Link, Kirby, Samus Aran, and Pikachu, who have all been confirmed for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. More characters, secret ones and otherwise, will likely be revealed closer to release.

#3:Metroid Prime 3: Corruption:
Slated to hit stores right alongside the Wii, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is one of Nintendo's top (dare I say it, prime) first party titles and one of the most popular. Utilizing the unique controls of the Wii system, Corruption is going to bring, much like Red Steel, a new feel to the first person shooter.

Corruption mixes, like its GameCube predecessors, puzzle solving elements and exciting action battles into a sci-fi storyline that develops as the puzzles are solved. Taking place after the events in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Corruption puts us once again in control of Samus Aran, the Zero-Suit-wearing bounty hunter who always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. This time, among many new bounty hunters, she will be following Dark Samus to different planets as Dark Samus attempts to corrupt each with Phazon seeds.

Sadly, Nintendo has announced that this is the final part of the Metroid Prime trilogy.

#2: Mario Galaxy:
What? What could possible knock Mario off the top spot? Well, it's not personal, but Mario just comes second this time. The iconic plumber has been all over the Mushroom Kingdom. He's flown planes, piloted subs, become metal and still lived to tell the tale. Now Mario, and creator Miyamoto-san, have taken it to the stars, literally.

In Mario Galaxy, the skies' no longer the limit. Players guide Mario from planets to asteroids to miniature planetoids as he gathers stars and tries to save the...er, galaxy, what else? Mario Galaxy makes use of the Wiimote and the nunchaku dongle by letting the player control a star with their Wiimote and move and direct Mario with the nunchaku dongle. The star is free-moving, allowing Mario to gather things he couldn't normally reach. In a similar way, shaking the star over Mario allows him to do his Smash Bros. spinning back-fist move.

The E3 demo, while it gave little in way of storyline, depicted a world of scattered planets and floating debris. Multiple paths allow levels of Mario Galaxy to remain fresh while still letting the player advance. Mario will fight monstrous bosses like a giant spider, Gooper Blooper from Mario Sunshine, and a mechanical boss who fires Bullet Bills.

Simply, Mario Galaxy was a blast to play at E3 and we want more. It will likely break records when it is released shortly after the Wii debuts. But what could possibly top Mario, you ask?

#1:The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess:
Ranking Twilight Princess above Mario Galaxy is largely personal preference, but while Mario Galaxy is slated to hit the Wii months after the Wii debut, Twilight Princess is slated as a launch title. Still, Nintendo has some pretty big guns leading the pack. Metorid, Mario, and Link will all be in stores at or around November (the predicted launch time for the Wii).

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is going to be Nintendo's magnum opus. With a new story in tow and a new method of shooting, fishing, and blocking making the game feel fresh. In a word Twilight Princess is different. It feels more hands-on than Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Windwaker, while still featuring puzzles that set the series apart. The biggest change to Link this time, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, lies in the power of the Wiimote. Like many of the games that are in the works for the Wii (and likely many to follow), the Wiimote allows Link to control in a very different, immersive way.

The Wiimote's pointer, represented by Navi (Link's navigational tutor), allows Link to perform (much like Mario) some motion sensitive moves. Link can parry by moving the nunchuck suddenly forwards, setting a stunned enemy up for a finishing attack (by dipping the Wiimote forward or by button press). But attacking, unlike in Red Steel, isn't done by slicing the air in front of you, which would interfere with Navi's usefulness.

The bow also takes advantage of the Wiimote. When you press the trigger on the nunchuck it brings the screen in to a first person viewpoint, allowing arrows to be controlled by aiming the Wiimote. Using the pointer you can take out enemies with a potshot, but you still have to make sure you're out of harm's way when you do it. Another neat trick, if you rotate the nunchaku dongle (simulating the rotation of a joystick) you can make Link perform his trademark spin slash.

How many systems ever launch with a killer app? How about two killer apps? With Twilight Princess and Metroid out the door the day of release and Mario following close behind, Nintendo is going to be a tough beast to stop. Add in the fact that the Wii is going to be closer to last generation prices as opposed to the Xbox 360's $300/$400 price tag and the PS3's $500/$600 price tag and you have one amazing deal from one of the industry's lifelong pioneers.

Yeah rumour has it...that they bundle controller/add-on attachment for the Wii-mote with the game...

That or you'll need a GCN controller.

It would be stupid if you had to buy a remote seperatly to play a game. Nintendo has told us that the wii-mote itself was pretty expensive, but the addons you can get for it will be very cheap as most of the technoilogy will be in the wii-mote and all the attachements are supposed to be attached to the wii-mote. So I guess you can expect wither the classic controller in the box when you buy a wii, or in the box of whatever game you buy that requires the classic controller (e.g. Smash Bros)

Ubisoft's Seven Wii Launch Titles

Wii fans, Ubisoft is your new best friend. The publisher has supported Nintendo's Wii console since it was first revealed, eagerly readying such anticipated exclusives as the first-person shooter Red Steel and the action-platformer Rayman Raving Rabbids, both of which are set to debut with the system in a matter of months. But guess what? The French videogame giant is hardly stopping there. It has another five - yes, five games planned for Wii, and they'll all arrive in time for the platform's launch window.

Ubisoft today announced that it is in development with versions of Far Cry, Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII, Monster 4x4 World Circuit and Open Season for Wii. In addition, the studio is bringing an all-new racer called GT Pro Series to the system.
The publisher also said that it has "many more titles in development" for Wii.

"We're thrilled that Ubisoft will be unveiling Wii versions of both exclusive new IP and established franchises," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president and chief operating officer for Nintendo of America. "Bursting with creativity, innovation and unadulterated fun, these Ubisoft games embody the qualities that will make Wii a huge hit with gamers new and established, young and old."

"Media and analysts agree that Ubisoft has the greatest potential for reward with the new console's launch because we believed in its potential from the beginning," said Laurent Detoc, president of Ubisoft North America. "With an impressive lineup of launch games that offer something for everyone, we are in a unique position to benefit from the Wii's success in appealing to both new and hardcore gamers."

The popular first-person shooter Far Cry pits players on a mission through lush Amazonian jungles and equips them with a variety of weapons, vehicles and special powers to attack the enemy. The game will make full use of the Wii-mote for enhanced maneuverability and will likewise boast new content.

Blazing Angels utilizes the Wii controller for intense dog fighting scenarios set to the backdrop of WWII.

The racer GT Pro Series is developed by MTO and optimized by Ubisoft for Wii. Through a deal with MTO, Ubisoft is able to distribute the project everywhere in the world except Japan. GT features more than 80 licensed cars, detailed tuning options, fluid drift-style controls and physics, and more. The title has been specifically tailored to make full use of the Wii's revolutionary remote.

Open Season is an adventure game based on the Sony Pictures Animation's CG animated film of the same name.

Monster 4x4 World Circuit is a truck racer that has been completely revamped to make full use of the Wii control system. The title takes players fully off-road for some muddy displays of mechanical power.

Finally, previously announced bigwigs Red Steel and Rayman Raving Rabbids round out the selection.

IGN interviewed Ubisoft North America's president, Laurent Detoc, about today's news. We highly suggest readers comb the interview for brand new information on Far Cry, Blazing Angels, GT Pro Series, and Monster 4x4: World Circuit for Nintendo's new console. Readers may be surprised to learn that these are much more than mere ports.

In addition, IGN has posted new screens of Red Steel and Rayman Raving Rabbids, as well as first screens of Monster 4x4: World Circuit in our their related media sections.

With seven official launch window titles from Ubisoft, the ever-expanding library of holiday Wii games is nearing 30 titles, and there are still more to come.

Linkypoo

Man Ubisoft really wanna sex up the Wii and Nintendo...they're litterally throwing themselves at this machine as if it's their own hardware.
