quote:
Brazilian champs fire another coach, beat Palmeiras

By Brian Homewood

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 16 (Reuters) - Brazilian champions Cruzeiro beat Palmeiras 2-1 on Sunday, hours after firing their second coach this year.

Paulo Cesar Gusmao was dismissed on Sunday morning, three days after his side were dumped out of the South American Libertadores Cup in the second round by unfancied Colombians Deportivo Cali.

Gusmao stayed on for his final game and watched Cruzeiro climb to fourth thanks to a typically classy goal by captain Alex early in the second half.

Cruzeiro had gone ahead in the first half when Palmeiras defender Leondardo headed past his own goalkeeper but the same player made amends minutes later by equalising from close range.

Gusmao took over in February after Vanderlei Luxemburgo, who led Cruzeiro to the Brazilian championship title last year, was fired.

He was told at the time that he would stay in charge until December 31.

Gusmao is the sixth coach to lose his job in six rounds of matches since the Brazilian championship started one month ago.

The dance of the coaches continued on Sunday as Guarani, who lost 1-0 to Corinthians, named former Brazil goalkeeper Zetti as their new coach. He replaces Joel Santana, fired one week ago.

GOALKEEPER SCORES

Sao Paulo goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni scored one of his trademark free kicks as the leaders drew 2-2 at home to Parana.

Defender Rodrigo put Sao Paulo ahead but Parana replied when Ceni misjudged a dipping shot by midfielder Axel.

Ceni, hero of last week's Libertadores Cup win over Argentina's Rosario Central when he saved two shots in a penalty shoot-out, atoned by floating in an exquisite free kick immediately after halftime.

Beto equalised for the visitors three minutes later.

Figueirense went second by beating Sao Caetano 1-0 to end their opponents' unbeaten record while striker Reinaldo scored a hat-trick as Criciuma hammered Goias 7-2 to go third.

Flamengo, who claim to have 40 million supporters, slipped into the relegation zone after losing 2-1 at home to Internacional following late penalty miss by midfielder Felipe.

Danilo and Maraba put the Porto Alegre team 2-0 up before Jonatas reduced the deficit and then won the penalty which his team-mate failed to convert.

LOL. Maybe we've seen different matches, because Flamengo was pitiful in defence and in midfield. Inter was quite aguerrido, played a willingly competitive football.

It wasn't a penalty, anyway.

Anyway, now we are among the Botton 4.

This is what happens when we don't play at Maracanã.

quote:
Sulking number 10s criticise supporters in Brazil

By Brian Homewood

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 17 (Reuters) - Cruzeiro captain Alex and Flamengo playmaker Felipe have both launched outspoken attacks on their supporters following Brazilian championship matches at the weekend.

Alex refused to celebrate after scoring the winner against Palmeiras on Sunday and then accused Cruzeiro supporters of having short memories.

Felipe, who missed a late penalty in the 2-1 home defeat by Internacional, was on a collision course with the club after saying that "the supporters are never satisfied."

The two players wear the coveted number 10 shirts for their clubs, are regularly picked for the Brazilian squad and are regarded as ball-playing artists in the finest Brazilian tradition.

Both are also prone to lapses which can exasperate their admirers.

Alex, who led the team which won Cruzeiro's first Brazilian championship title last year, turned villain last week after they were knocked out of the Libertadores Cup, the South American equivalent of the Champions League, by Colombia's Deportivo Cali.

He was jeered after missing during the penalty shootout which Deportivo Cali won 3-1.

"The supporter has a short memory," he told reporters after Sunday's match.

"They forgot that I took part in the greatest title conquest in the club's history last year."

INDUSTRIAL CITY

Felipe had already criticised Flamengo for staging their home matches in the industrial city of Volta Redonda instead of the traditional Maracana stadium and was unhappy at being released from Brazil's match with France on Thursday at Flamengo's request.

Felipe said he would rather have played for the national side in FIFA's Centenary match in Paris rather than in the Copa Brasil quarter-final tie against Gremio.

Sunday's missed penalty appeared to add to his frustration.

"We make sacrifices and come to Volta Redonda for financial reasons," he said, referring to the fact that Flamengo are paid by the city government to stage their matches there.

"But our wages are still being paid late. So the sacrifice isn't worth it."

Felipe, who two weeks ago said the Volta Redonda public did not know how to support the team, finished with another attack.

"I missed a penalty and they waited for their chance to jeer me. They don't give us the support we deserve. They think we have to score lots of goals against everyone," he said.

"The supporters are never satisfied. If they want, they can put pressure on the club's directors and I'll leave."

Flamengo, still without a win in the championship after six matches, were expected to announce disciplinary action against their top player this week.

I remember when Inter also started championships like that. The years of 1999 and 2002 are harsh to remember.

RIP Atlético-MG and Fla.
