O'Sullivan hit with £21,000 fine for UK Championship walkout
Ronnie O'Sullivan has been hit in the pocket to the tune of almost £21,000 for his Maplin UK Championship walkout last season.
The two-time world champion dramatically conceded his quarter-final match against Stephen Hendry in December after missing a red when 4-1 behind.
The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association came down hard on the 31-year-old at a disciplinary hearing today, docking him 900 ranking points and £4,050 prize money from the tournament in question, as well as imposing a fine of £11,750.
He was also ordered to pay £5,000 towards the cost of the hearing.
A WPBSA statement read: "A Disciplinary Hearing took place on Thursday 31 May 2007 before the Disciplinary Committee of the WPBSA to establish whether Mr Ronnie O'Sullivan, a member of the Association, was in breach of the Association's Disciplinary Rules following reports concerning his conduct during the Maplin UK Championship in December.
"Mr O'Sullivan attended the hearing. The Committee found that Mr O'Sullivan's behaviour constituted a breach of the Association's Disciplinary Rules.
"The Committee ordered that Mr O'Sullivan forfeit the 900 ranking points and £4,050 prize money for the quarter-final round in question.
"The Committee further imposed a fine of £11,750 and ordered Mr O'Sullivan to pay £5,000 towards the costs of the hearing.
"There will be no further comment on this matter."
O'Sullivan was 24 points ahead in the sixth frame when he missed an attempted pot and immediately declared the match over, shaking the hand of Hendry and referee Jan Verhaas before walking out of the Barbican Centre arena in York.
Not too bad, considering that it is WSA and they couldn’t do anything that was of any real significance due to him being bigger than the sport (ie banning him), the 900 ranking points forfeit is better than nothing.
In other news, John Higgins made a 147 the other night:
