...can't you do that in Custom Games? I've not really ventured in there so I don't know

If by "perks" you mean better armour and weapons etc, that's just stupid. Just makes it impossible for newcomers to the game, giving another unnecessary advantage to experienced players.

On the plus side, the 360 version doesn't have any multiplayer achievements, so if I do eventually buy it then at least there's half a chance of getting 1000/1000 - haven't done that since COD2.

Nowhere near impossible. Did you play the beta?

Came in late to it with loads of people at rank 25 and easily managed to compete while not being that good at FPS, and you don't drop down in levels when you do poorly.

The perks are simply different guns, 'perks' (increased health, damage, etc) and, camouflage, etc. You still have plenty available coming in ranked 0.

It's an incentive more than a necessity, seeing as you get to choose all your starting weapons setup at rank 4.

Nope, console was being repaired the entire month. But it sounds similar to Vegas. Still not sure that I understand how "perks" work - and how if you're a newcomer facing off against someone with the "increased health" thing, you're not going to feel totally cheesed. But if it's all available from fairly early on, maybe it's less bad.

Yeah, the 'perks' are everyone's from the start. Infact i suspect increased health is but it's a small advantage that might help from range. Not going to stop someone gunning you down from short distances.

Everyone gets three perks, and there are quite a few available from the start. You get better ones as you rank up, such as Martyrdom which drops a live grenade whenever you die and Last Stand..... easier in video than words.

They are available around halfway anyway and you get stuff like C4 from the start, no idea what kind of stuff you can get 26-45~.

Perks just make leveling up mean something, they dont make a huge difference in game.
