The Aston Villa thread. After 24 years of impotence, we've got Randy. Mon the MON
So, the old thread got shut down (after 99 pages) and we need a new home for our optimistic ramblings and constant moanings.
This thread is of course dedicated to the boy with one ball :*), and the mighty Steven Davis.
So to start:

Looking To The Future
Well as a Villa fan I thought this time would never come. Ellis for so long has always looked after number one, and the purse strings. It's curious to think what kind of a legacy he could actually leave behind. 'At least we're not Leeds' 'We're not in debt'! Amazing! What a star! Businessman keeps traditionally rich proud club stable for 20 years. What a magnificent achievement. Stable and stagnating. Still at least he's decided to go before nature calls and sell up.
Under Ellis we have progressed into a laughing stock - whereby media and fans of other clubs see us as nothing more than a mediocre middleman side. At the kick off of the Premiership - a useful starting point seeing as every media outlet seems to forget football existed pre 1992 - we finished runners up to Manchester United. At that stage we were easily on an even keel with any of the clubs then - with the exception of SAF's side who went on to enjoy substantial success.
Now - how did Mr. Ellis OBE go about ensuring we maintained our lofty status? Well let's see, he allowed Liverpool to come back and overtake us, Newcastle got promoted and overtook us, Arsenal came back and overtook us with Wenger's arrival - Chelsea with the moneybags suddenly are now "by miles" bigger than us, and for God's sake, even Everton managed to jump from their seemingly habitual bottom half spot to enjoy a superb season ahead of us.
Now Bolton, Charlton and Middlesborough - all clubs who were in the First Division those years ago have come back and have seemed I presume in the neutral's eyes to have a brighter future than Villa's. Bugger it, even Man City and Spurs fellow underachievers for years are now up there.
Doug's riposte to criticism? " Well at least we're not Leeds!" To be honest mate, at least they were able to edure some emotional years in the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE. Our peak was mid nineties - when we still clinging onto the tails of the Uniteds of Manchester and Newcastle and barely beating off resurgent Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea sides.
It's so frustrating to see us slip away in all those years with nothing more than two league cup wins - the last of which was a good nine years ago now. Of course every manager has had their weakness but NONE of them has received backing comparable to rivals in their respective eras. Of course Doug and co have twisted the figures effectively enough to get dimwitted media chiefs to believe we "spent 100million quid under Gregory", managing to hide the fact that the actually NET spend after incomings too ( that's selling players yeah?) was barely 4 million a year - not exactly the stuff of dreams is it? Well manipulated again Doug. Then there's his extraordinary ego representing magnificently the Doug Credo : I Rule Therefore I Am.
Naming a stand after yourself - for services to what?! Certainly not us! But finally there seems to be hope on the horizon - no more inept management and lack of ambition, No more perceived negativity, perhaps the apathy amongst the fans may dissapear and we can look forward to a rollicking atmosphere in the Park once again - missing for so long. So come on you Comer Brothers - make the Villa proud once more!

o was sleptical of russians being dodgy. The front man for this take oever is a villa fan - basically nothing odd just Doug finally selling up. Doug will have some random slot for his ego, but this will allow us to compete properly in the transfer market. May take a year or two for it to be really noticed, but the thought of challenging the likes of yourself, spurs and newcastle ( at least financially ) isn't such a daft thought now

So is it definately going ahead? Will be interesting to see how you do because my opinion of Villa is of a fairly big club but stuck in a sort of mood where no-matter who you buy you're going to be a bit crappy - much like Liverpool if i'm honest. We're starting to get out of that a bit now (although we still are terrible a hell of a lot fo the time) and i'd be interesting to see if you do as well with a new era coming in and a new direction.
Although the thing that confuses me the most is that Lee Hendrie and Gareth Barry have been around forever yet are about 24 or so [/quote]
hendries 28,
but we should be getting back up to speed providing this goes ahead. Wouldn't be surprised to see DOL go either.

To be fair, I'm not a great fan of Ellis, but he's done a pretty good job. He's kept us solvent, kept us in the top 10 pretty much every year, and signed some good players.
Sure, its time to get someone else in now, but I could never look back and hate him for whats he's done.
