The Torchwood in our universe was created by events the Doctor was a part of. So there must've been the same set of events leading to the creation of Torchwood in the alternate universe. So there must be another Doctor in the alternate universe. Right?
| no, it evolved interdependently, iirc the timelords exist outside of time & space (as did Gallifrey ) so he wouldn't be subject to duplication afaik

or
been able to press the button before he was sucked into the void, as with rose she also had the energy all over her
| for anyone dedicated whoviens have i missed something or is that a valid point?

It is a valid point and I think you're right.
It could have been that originally she was either going to die during the run and they changed the scripts for the tail end of the season to keep her alive. Or the idea was that she was going to be sucked into the void and the Doctor knew that he won't be able to get her back again, at least not without releasing the Daleks and Cybermen again.
The could have changed that so that they can bring her back to make another spin-off.

The Time Lords had mastery over time and space, but didn't exist outside of them.

I'm starting to get into Doctor Who. Really good show.
From the episodes i have seen there seems to be an awful lot set in the past. This is a concept that allows you to go anywhere your imagination can think of and yet we dont see a lot of the future.
I hope i am wrong and we do or have had future episodes as i work my way through but it reminds me of Sliders. That too had a great concept and yet each episode was just a rip off of whichever film the writers had seen that week.
Obviously i'm not saying that Doctor Who rips anything off but just that i hope we get to see some cool stuff set in the future.

A warning for people who don't want the last two episodes spoiled, the tv guides on the bbc online have annouced who Saxon is.
*****Tiny spoliers*****
And did anyone hear the trailer for Utopia on radio 1? An interesting bit has the doctor asking the Professor (Sir Derek Jacobi) "what species are you?"
to which the answer is "Time lord...........the last of".
