Well basically everytime you back it's just as if you're placing any normal bet.
Everytime you lay it's as if you're the bookie for that bet.
If you were to back Man United at 2.0 earlier today for £10 then you would stand to win £10. After Man United had scored twice the odds for laying (they pink box just right of centre) would be way down.
You could lay £10 at 1.1 which would mean there is a seperate bet in play which will lose you £1 if Man United win and win you £10 if they don't. Therefore you've chopped £1 off your winnings and ensured no losses.
Laying at lower odds than you've backed ensures a profit. You may want to lay another few quite on Manchested United, if you were to lay another £10 bet then you'd win £8 if Man U won and £10 if they didn't.
Hope this helps. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

the cook, i've been trying the backing/laying thing recently for small stakes (im up to about £10 a match now, getting braver!). the only time i have messed up is in teh villa match yesterday whne i waited too long to lay unders and then villa scored.
i need to learn to lay for a small profit, that will potentially be bigger if i use higher stakes.
