solar flare's are actually not that rare, they happen all the time although the bigger ones happen in a 11 year cycle. However i guess it could maybe be a theory. the last massive solar flare was in the 1800's but it was thought that as technology was not a factor of civilisation the people were not effected by it.
I guess they could link these solar flares to triggers in the growth of evolved humans. while smaller flares has lead to small pockets of evolved humans, for a 1000 years there population did not grow much in this time. however the big solar flare in the 1800's has lead there population to increase faster in numbers which we are now seeing in the tv show.
probably a load of rubbish.

Solar flares is something I've added to my theories scrap heap really, just couldn't find enough evidence to support it. While I'm not keen on a random event theory, it might be something we have to accept. Obviously inter-breeding helps spread the genetic markers, we've seen this.

its probably just going to be that this is the nextstage in human evolution and there numbers have been growing through time.
what i am more interested about is how people get certain abilities. mytheory that i posted was that the abilities they get are linked to there personalities.

I'm not so sure it's as simple as that. If my theory is correct, then these mutations have been showing for more than a thousand years. Now while evolution is a slow process, it is also affected by changes in the environment surrounding the subject. Think of how much the world has changed for humans in the last one thousand years. Yet we have no real evidence of this phenomenon advancing any further, or even coming into the public spectrum of interest.
Biology, genetics and evolution theory are weak subjects for me, so I'm shooting in the dark here, but I think that maybe what we have is a marker, or a set of marker, genetic markers, that give certain humans a predisposition towards evolutionary changes, dependent on a multitude of factors, some of them social and environmental. It would certainly explain why some evolved humans show abilities at a young age, while others are into adulthood before their powers mature.
Linking their abilities to their personlaity is a difficult one to swallow, as we are aware that some evolved folk develop abilities from a very early age. Claire was under one year of age when hers became obvious, yet she wouldn't have a personality yet, certainly not one to speak of anyway.

| i am more thinking about how a certain persons brain is wired leads them to certain abilities which can also be linked to what personality a person my grow to have.
Sometimes for some reason when people have brain surgery there personality can change which means that nature rather than nuture can play a big role in that. seeing as the abilities are linked to the brain then i think the type of personality that a person may have and therefore power is partly pre-determined by the frontal lobe of the brain which contains personality

While a persons personality is stored in the brain, and surgery can result in changes (you shove your fingers in there it's gonna have to react somehow), I thought the generally accepted consensus was that your personality was more "grown" during your formative years, through experience and general life? I think it may be more that certain people have the predisposition to develop abilities, and their environment dictates what these abilities are.
The criminal develops the ability to pass through walls, the lonely child who spends all his time with computers develops the ability to talk to them. The mother, desperate to protect and provide for her son, develops a side to her that can do just that. The baby, doomed to die in a fire, develops an accelerated healing factor.
Obviously, some are much more difficult to pin down and define their moment of conception, and the factors involved, but that's due to a lack of information, and maybe that's something we can get through the various media sources over the break. I know NBC.com is running some kind of video profiles for the main characters atm, but I've not checked them out yet, so no idea of content.

| Yeah thats what i basically was getting at, peter and his empathy with people leads him to his power etc.
i still think however that in the end there will be something that triggered the evolution of humans as that has happened throughout human history from apes. whether it was standing on two legs, eating meat, fire etc there is always something that triggers big changes and i don't think this will be any different.
no idea what though or how far it goes back but i guess hiro in the past will give us some clues.

Just got round to reading it takes a village part three now. Snake and crane story was a good touch, and seeing the Haitian let rip with his abilities was kinda scary, gives us a better idea of why he is so controlled and reserved. Gives him horrific potential as a weapon though, if he is able to reproduce that effect on a large scale.
