Robert - If the BB checks, the flop is dealt. However, he can also raise the size of the pot. If this happens betting goes back around the table where the players can fold/call/reraise. After everyone has made their decision then the flop is dealt, assuming 2 players are still in the pot.

oh yeh you are right, the big blind has the chance to raise. If he doesnt he checks then the flop is dealt, if he does bet then betting goes round once more.

Does anyone know of a site/program which i can use that will enable me to set up a private game so a couple of friends and i can play for playmoney?

The two i have are bet365 and partypoker and i dont think either have this function?
