European PS3 Price Leaked?
Purse strings may be stretched slightly further than expected.
by Rob Burman, IGN UK
UK, January 17, 2007 - Sony's Official PS3 website in Ireland may have revealed the final cost of the console in Europe. Ready that sharp intake of breath though - according to the site, Sony's next-gen machine could hit shelves with a price tag more expensive than previously thought.
Currently, both 60GB and 20GB models appear to have increased by 30 Euros - at 629.99 EUR and 529.99 EUR respectively. A direct Euro to GBP conversion makes that a price hike of around twenty quid. However, the news isn't likely to affect anyone in the UK too much, with 629.99 EUR roughly equating to 413.962 GBP. In other words, still a tenner cheaper than we were expecting to pay anyway.
When quizzed today, a Sony representative told us they were "looking into" the issue. Those worried the UK cost may also increase can find some solace in the fact that Sony said it's "very likely" the 60GB version will launch here at the anticipated RRP of £425.
We're expecting an official announcement regarding both the PS3's European price and, hopefully, the release date early next week.

The cost isnt an issue at the moment anyway. They could charge £1000 and sell all their stock for the first few months. Only once the people who are desperate for the machine does price become an issue. The problem for Sony is that they wont have this "wii" effect where people come round and play, really enjoy it and decide to get one. A bunch of my mates are looking out for wii's now but none were particularly arsed about getting a 360 after they played that.

I seriously doubt the PS3 will be a big seller...as much as the UK/Europe is/has been Sony's biggest market...there was appeal and recognition of the PSX/PS2 as a platform.
I've said it ever since they announced the purpose of the PS3 in 2005 and even more so when they announced the prices originally and I'll say it again! The PS3 will be to Sony what the N64 was to Nintendo...the start of a confusing period in Sony's history with no clear direction what-so-ever on how to take gaming forward and the playstation brand!
People forget Sony has abandoned the very consumers that made the PSX and PS2 successful...Nintendo have scooped up a portion of these consumers...and the momentum is very much with Nintendo. Sony can't buy good press...even bad press concerining the Wii and Nintendo doesn't affect them or console sales.

I wouldn't take the site's figures as fact! But it is a rough estimate of how things are shaping up at present!

| same boat as, always gone down the sony console route untill I got a 360. glad I made the change now seeing as all the confusion and price quoted for a ps3
could this finally see the end of the console victories sony had, their main mistake imo was giving microsfot a good 16/17 month period without the ps3 in this country, price has now dropped of 360 and now there are good priced packages about that most people who want one are willing to pay
most gamers aren't willing to pay the ps3 price that it will be at launch when 360 with a few games will come out £100 that ps3 without any games

Sony have made 2 key errors here. Firstly, they have failed to significantly distinguish the PS3 from the 360 in a way that will matter to most of the casual gamers that Sony has always appealed to. This becomes important because of their second error: the length of time between the release of the 360 and the PS3. This has meant that Microsoft have had a head start and, when, combined with the fact that the PS3 is not significantly different from the 360, has meant that people who might have bought both will only buy one. The fact that they're similar also means that people are less likely to wait. On top of this, the attractive futuristic alternative that the Wii offers has left the PS3 unable to compete on originality and beaten to the post by the 360 on its home territory: appeal to casual gamers.
If you're going to release significantly after your main rival, you need something to make people wait. Sony doesn't have that.

OK - undoubtedly stupid question coming up here.
Would it be possible to connect the PS3 to the new Microsoft Home Server software (soon to be show cased on a new HP Home Media Server) - as this will be good for back-ups, viewing saved HD movies/trailers around the house, etc....
