Rep Power: 0 | Season 2015/2016 AFC Wimbledon - League Two
I decided to keep the squad mainly intact. The season went well, but I got bored. All these years in the Conference with only small changes to squad and tactics were too much for me, and I decided to try a new challenge.
So, after about 30 games into the season, we were in a secure 11th place, I jumped ship and went to a struggling Gillingham (22nd).
In hindsight, it was a bad decision. Gillingham were 6,5 million in debt, were leaking 120k per month and had only 14 players in the squad. I couldn't get a single victory with these players in all these games until the end of the season, and as soon as relegation was confirmed, I resigned.
I'm looking for a new job.

Shame about the ship jumping, sounds like the worst decision since the guy who stowed away on the Titanic.

I got appointed in November. The squad consisted mainly of overaged, overpaid bastards who were the main reason why the club had fallen down from the heights of the Championship.
I tried around a couple of tactics and playing mentalities and it seemed that none of them suited the team. Even the transfer window didn't really help since we were over the wage budget and thus I was not allowed to sign any decent players. The wage I could offer was restricted to 325 p/w. However, I could sign a couple of prospects and decided to try and implement a style of play that did not include any long balls.
We finished 20th and sent Wrexham down to the Conference on goal difference.
Manager state: insecure.
Nevertheless, I remodelled the squad for the upcoming season, selling a few overpaid guys, reducing the wage budget by 15k/w and signing a few players. For some reason, the board didn't sack me, so the new season can begin.

After almost getting the sack in the past season, the board gave me another chance and demanded a respectable mid-table position.
The cleaning up of the squad went well, I signed a total of 8 players for 15k (3 of them ended up becoming first-teamers), and let go of 9 players for a combined 115k. Amongst them was an AMC/FC (I guess my best player) who was moaning all the time, and just to get rid of him, I sold him for a discount of 95k. He ended up becoming the L2-signing of the season for Port Vale.
Anyway, the league went without big incidents, and we finished 10th with a balance of 20-6-20 and 53:47 goals.
We had a couple of bad injuries in the squad, and apparently we are lacking squad depth. The second row was not up to it, but we never came clear to a struggle.
Funniest moment of the season:
one of the signings (a left winger) played 4 games, did *****, got dropped to the reserves and transfer listed and now hates me for it. "Dislikes you and find you difficult to work with".
So, at the end of the season, we're financially healthy, the board and fans are delighted, and slowly I can start shaping the team to my likings.

The board and fans wanted a respectable league position and the media predicted an 11th place for me. We did better than that and finished in a respectable 8th position, only a single point behind a playoff spot.
P46 W21 D7 L18 62:52 goals, +10, 70 pts.
The squad is okay now and performs to my expectations, so I'm only doing the occasional buying/selling. We're a bit under the wage budget, so financially the club is healthy as well. A good thing: I'm selling off a very talented DRC for 2k + 30% to L1 Woking. I don't like that player, and the coaches and fans don't like him either. He's a pain in the ass for some reason, so he has to go.
As for the tactical side, slowly I'm getting the hang out of the short passing game my team play. It's the first time ever I'm taking an eye on these individual statistics when signing players, and it's quite some fun even if it's hard at times not signing a ****** player just because he can't play a simple pass.
No success in the cups, we went out everywhere in the first or second round.
Board offered me a new 3-year contract, which I accepted.
Elsewhere, Wrexham just got relegated from the Conference National. |
