I've chosen an LL club and have no scouts on staff. I've placed an ad, but no response for over a month now. Is it OK in LLM to do a scout search? Without scouts, I basically have to keep my same squad for the year.
Keep the ad out there and see if somebody applies the next month.
Different opinions on this, but when I had waited two months I signed a scout outside the Job Centre. Should be said that I didn't have any players at that point, and I deemed that more unrealistic.
You know what? We should really get a Guidelines Thread stickied in the Forum Header...one which had a bit which said:

Signing Staff.
LLaMas usually only sign Staff that speak the language of the players they’ll be involved with. In Britain it’d be guys who spoke English. In Germany, German, and so on. The exception to this is scouts. Scouts don’t have day to day contact with players on a verbal communication level and can rely on their observation skills to identify worthwhile signings. It’s sometimes extremely difficult to sign a scout and you have to sign a foreign guy, so it’s looked upon as a “needs must” situation when signing scouts.
Since the huge improvement in the Job Centre in FM2007 the way to obtain Staff is to advertise in the Centre and choose Staff who apply (if they'll sign). The use of Staff Search is now frowned upon and must only be used as a last resort.
Current playing staff who express a desire to step into coaching or scouting from your squad are obviously fair game as well.

WTS ^^
Also bear in mind that any players in news items, or (I think, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) against whom you've played are fair game for scouting by coaches or AssMans.
I don't know if I am right about this and if it's considered to be tipping but I think that if you leave the same ad running for months it doesn't get you any new applications.
It might be better to stop the ad and put out a new one.
I think this has worked for me in the past but I could be mistaken since I've been hitting myself with a stick for the last fifteen minutes or so.

Rubbish. I had the same ad going for nearly a full season. I finally had someone apply for the job half way through the relegation stage playoff (in Portugal). I finally got a scout just before the end of the first season.
And another thing. Why does everyone want to change their team in the first season. How do you know that your players are not good enough. They may be. If you use the players you have you may find some gems that have been written off.
Whilst I was struggling to find a scout I had to play players that I considered carp. They performed perfectly adequately and are still at club long after the Assistant told me they were worthless.
I think in the future, in my first season, I will not look to buy anyone for a position that I have covered. At least until the January window.
If I get a new team and the transfer window is open, I can try and find players who suit the style of play I want to implement.
If I get a new team in the middle of the season, and the team is in relegation trouble, I'll try to find players who can help me. It has been proven that the players can't do it, or they'd be in mid-table or higher.
If I get a new team and that team is fulfilling the requirements, there's no need to make changes to the squad.

I can see where you're coming from but when the bookies predict you coming dead last and the board and fans expect you to fight bravely against relegation you tend to think that squad improvements are needed.
