Rediscovering the spirit of '78 - the rise of Blyth Spartans
My first LLM game thread for a couple of years. Thought it was about time that I got my arse in gear.
As ever with the last few FM's - I start off at the bottom with Blyth, and this version is no exception. Difference is for me that this is my first year as Blyth Spartans researcher.
So life begins in the Conference North. No real dosh in the bank, but a reasonable squad which has room for improvement.
Season One
Finish 2nd in the Conference North and go up in the Playoff final after a 1-0 win v Southport. Had a great run in to the end of the season (for a change). Cup competitions - nothing to speak of, save for making the 2nd round of the FA Trophy.
Season Two
A real struggle, but we manage to finish 18th in the Conference. Getting players in through the door is a real problem, as with being a little club - no-one wants to come to you ! Made the 1st round of the FA Cup, before losing 2-1 at Wallsall. Get to the 4th round of the trophy and as usual, bow out of the Setanta Shield in the early stages.
Objective achieved though - avoided relegation.
Season Three
A much better season, finished 10th in the Conference. Scoring goals has been a bit of a problem, only managing 56 in 46 games. However - defensively a lot better than last time out, only conceeding 43 in 46. Highlight of the campaign was a 2-1 in at League One side Crewe, in the FA Cup 2nd round. Got hammered 6-0 at Leeds in the 3rd round, but making some dosh from the cup run was a major bonus. Again - no real run in either the FA Trophy or Setanta Shield.
So - the club has managed to consolidate in the Conference. Will need to bring in a few players in the summer, with a CB and a powerful SC being priorities. My name has been linked to many jobs over the last couple of months. Will I stay at Blyth or do better things beckon...... ?
Interestingly enough - 3 seasons gone and I'm yet to make a cash signing. Think that's gotta be a record for me ! Bank balance is looking healthy though, with nearly £750K in the coffers. However, am hoping for training and youth facilities to be upgraded.
