Okay, great, you get to pick and choose players, set tactics, etc. and based on that you win or lose. If you think about it, there's not a lot going on. I have played the game on different difficulties, from lower league to premiership and the biggest problem I have with FM08 is that every game is the same.
I think FM08 as it is works fine. I don't get these peoplem who complain that they can't score or their keepers let too many goals slip past, etc. I think the majority of these people are nitpickers. My complaint is nothing like that.
I'm talking about how there's no variety in this game. There's very little you can actually be doing beyond buying and selling players and messing with tactics. If you've played one game of FM08, you've played them all. Using a bottom league team is essentially the same as using Liverpool FC.
I want my games to be different. I want things to happen. The only way forward for me is to introduce random events. I believe SI have said they will never do that and that's a shame, because I for one cannot get past the sheer linearity of the game as it is. At the very least, SI can bring in a group of writers and rewrite the whole thing and add bits in so it doesn't FEEL linear.
I don't know how many people agree with me. I'm sure there's one or two of you who feel the same. I expect a lot of people telling me I'm stupid.
You're not stupid, but the things you describe are what football managers do. A Football Manager sim will always involve things like buying and selling players, picking teams, setting tactics, etc, because that's the life and job of a football manager. I'm not sure what "random events" you'd like to see included to make the game less linear, though i can't help thinking that such events with take the realistic edge off the game.
I think the game will always be "linear", in the way that you describe.
What I'd like to see is less predictability, in the team talks and the media, and of course that means more text to translate and more "impacts" to calculate.
As it stands, the game includes a lot of "subplots", but they aren't "called out" as such.
The problem with random events is that they could potentially ruin the club (scandals, Alan Sugeresque adventures etc..) and they would be beyond the players control, imagine if you will taking Ebbsfleet () to the premiership and then there were found to be transfer irregularities and your deducted 15 points or some such, I think most players would throw the game out the window at that point.
I don't think what your saying is stupid, but the game is certainly not linear since you can do almost anything you want,e.g: start as Man Utd manager, sell half the first team, tell Arsene Wenger you love him and then retire 3 months in.
I kind of agree with you but then again you have to think, Football Manager is representing real life so those are the main stuff a manager does. Maybe a few ideas wouldn't be bad though.
Start game - choose team - sort out tactics and bring players in - - profit.
I just don't think random events would add value to the experience, maybe you could give some very basic examples of what the events you want might be.
It's like saying "Rollercoaster Tycoon: Get land, build rides, make profit, complete scenario". All games are linear in this respect. The stuff you have listed that makes FM linear is just what you would expect to do if you were a real manager. Linked, in a way, to the old argument of 2is it a game or a simulator?".
Imagine a sandbox game supporting GTA's new engine, FM's engine, Crysis's engine etc...and you could choose to be a gangster/footballer/football manager etcccc....
I'd imagine it would come on 50 blue ray discs and cost £500.
I think that the best new feature that would add depth and quality to the game is : Individual player training / Team training ( giving the player/players instruction to do something - for instance corner training and then looking it like you look at matches, with an option when the player/players does what you want you click on ok so the player/players know what you want ).There should be an option for passing let say like primary, secondary pass if you want your player to give a long thru pass to a specific player that should be trained and then confirmed so the player knows exactly what you want ( simply order them to do something and when they do it right you hit ok and thats that ). In real football a manager has a control of the players passing etc. That shuold be more detailed in the game.
not a stupid topic at all, but there are different ways to play this game. i must admit, i use the same tactics for Lewes FC (BSS) as I do for Juventus & Atl Madrid. but then thats just me.
having no budget for Lewes, i spent more time looking for loans and free transfers than i ever did at the top clubs. it gives a whole new perspective on the game. i settle for players with 12-14s for key skills, rather than 18+ for everything.
in FM07, i had two games in which i approached team talks and squad discipline differently, expecting wins or wishing luck, just to see player reactions. again, i saw things that i wouldn't have seen otherwise.
i agree with every post here. when you think about it, 1-0 is the same as 5-1. 3 points and a win. both teams out to win. so is football linear?
