Default An Observation For Anyone to Comment On

I am playing as SV Wacker Burghausen in the German Regional Division South.

At present we are 2nd in the league after 15 matches.

We are not making any money, but generally all is going well, and I am enjoying the game, it is fun and a challenge.

For the record, I am using FM2008 and am fully patched.

I have two major worries though.

Even at this level, I have never seen a goalkeeper actually run out of goal, run right past the ball in the penalty area, thus allowing a striker to simply tap into an empty net.

The second worry, is apparently my defenders need to do exactly the same thing.

Now, I am not claiming the game to be "unplayable" nor will I be demanding my money back, nor will I threaten to revert to an earlier version, or never buy another FM version.

No, I am enjoying the game, but those two points are really ridiculous, defending you wouldn't see with 10 years old, so don't bother telling me it's a tactical issue.

Bottom line, that aspect of the match engine is stuffed. No one who has seen that can argue the point, you have never seen any human defend with such stupid movement.

Basic defending principles require any defender or goalkeeper to close on the ball carrier, not go rushing past them and end up on the wrong side of the ball.

I would be interested in hearing if others have seen this, and, are SI planning to do something about this obvious error in their match engine ??

Is this happening with set pieces or in general play?

Ranson52. Although I am also struggling with similar problems in Conference South, (the defenders at least), I must also admit that being a regular watcher of League 2 football, the stupidity of defenders that I seem to see on an almost bi-weekly basis sometimes beggard belief.

Having said that, I don't think that SI have got this area right yet and hope that it improves in future patches.

For my mind it is more "positional awareness" of blth themselves, the opposition players, the ball and even the goal that is the main issue, not "closing down" as so many people seem to be mentioning.

General play mate. I do have comments on set pieces, but they can wait for another time.

No it's not a closing down issue. It's like they play with bloody blindfolds on.

Some sort of common sense has to be applied in the match engine. For example when a corner is cleared to a player near the halfline, then the attacking team player who is standing back moves towards his position rather than towards the ball and the player has a clean run on goal.

I don't think anyones experience of backyard football even can justify this action.

And whats more, it is not the tactics. I am still to find an instruction that asks a player to track the ball after a corner

Yes, this is very annoying, I've conceded a few this way. Also in my last match my defender with 15 pace was outpaced by a striker with 8 pace (and less acceleration), seemed to be catching up only to stop his run and allow a free shot on goal (which he scored). Even if you suggest it was the striker's strength that held him off my defender was much stronger anyway and would've easily outpaced him.
