Definitely get FM 2007. Its simply a lot more polished and playable than the current FM 2008.

the current game in my view, and the new features, while interesting , are not worth shelling out lots more money for

Exactly right, though I think you're still being too kind. These so called new features are all pretty much rubbish.
Confidence indicator is utter garbage. You can take a second / third tier European team to the UEFA Champion League semi-finals and still only get a "satisfied" with the board. Lose a worthless league cup match and both the fans and the board hate you forever.
Media reactions is pretty lame and useless, and UNCHANGED from FM 2007.
New "days till citizenship" indicator useful though hardly a revolutionary feature.
Tactics / training same as 2007. We still get very little feedback in terms of how our tactic is working on the pitch. For those of you that have the time and patience to watch a full game highlights and analysis each pass/run/shot good for you. For the rest of us I wouldn't mind more clear / indicative feedback.
Match Engine in FM 2008 - frustrating. At first defenders won't close down properly. Now with the 1.1 patch strikers can't score properly. We've all seen the I had 30+ shots, 15+ on target and only win 1-0. Yeah its frustrating and fine we all know that in football it does happen. But for every single Bolton 1 ManU 0 result, there are about a hundred more Barcelona 4 Levante 0.
Transfer Centre - yeah... useful - not essential.
Interface - definitely greatly improved from FM 07. If only we could say the same for the match engine.
So yeah overall I wouldn't bother with FM 2008. I myself have reloaded my 07 save and have decided to give 08 a rest... maybe when the 1.2 patch comes out I'll give it another go.
