I've been reading the excellent "Provided You Don’t Kiss Me" by Duncan Hamilton. Previous to this I read "The Damned United" by David Peace and what it made me think was how tragic (in a footballing sense, not in the real meaning of the word)it is that the likes of Johann Cruyff, George Best, Franz Beckenbauer, Billy Bremner, Bobby Charlton, Zico and John Robertson have not been immortalised by FM (and Carlton Palmer has!!!). I would absolutely love it if FM did a retro game, maybe starting in 1974 or another classic year for football.
Obviously it would require a completely different approach to researching the players and clubs, possibly through old almanacs and archive footage. Not only would it be nice to see these classic players realised in the game but the transfer system would be a lot saner. For the player who wants to play with five subs etc, you could retain these options in the game setup.
It probably wouldn't appeal to everyone. Not everybody wants to go back to those days. The period won't have much relevance for a lot of FM players.
As a one-off game I'd be happy to play it. What do other people think?
It would be great to get a few of these done officially although two potential problems are the difficulty in creating an accurate database of players from years gone by and of course the issue of new players coming into the game although I wouldn't be against using newgens and just creating a new future of playing talent, basically.
Would be great to do, as purely a data update, but more trouble than it is worth maybe.
