Other than adding a bit of realism I'm struggling to see the point in this feature. For starters it's actually impossible to gauge from the match engine whether or not a decision is correct or not, unless it's a blatant offside. Whenever you slag off a referee the only response I've had is a warning from the FA with a message stating replays showed the decision to be correct.
Secondly in cases where there's been a contentious penalty (quite frequently for me)the only thing you have to gain really is boosting the morale of the player in question. However if you do criticize a decision the vast majority of the time the response is 'stirred up unneccessary controversy', only very rarely do you get 'manager was right to speak his mind'. And if you agree the decision was correct most of the time the player will be upset you didn't stand up for them unless you choose the grudgingly accept option which sometimes brings about the 'coping with adversity' response. If you compare this to RL where managers criticize decisions every week virtually the morale in squads would plummet if this was the case.
I dont know, I've actually experienced a positive effect many times by slamming the ref. This is particularly true when one of your players is adament that the decision was wrong. It depends on the personality of your squad as to how they'll react. Plus it's true to life, managers always get annoyed and slate a ref, then either the FA says nothing or they defend the ref and punish the manager. There will always be that solidarity between the FA and the ref so the way you handle the media is more for your own squad.
i find i bypass a lot of this type of media stuff now as it seems to upset someone whatever i say, just say no comment now and that doesn't seem to have had a negative effect.
I slammed the ref after a cupgame where they allowed a goal against me so clearly offside I didn't even have to watch the replay to see it. Got me thrown out of the cup and upset my board and fans.
The whole controversial thing seem strange as there are atleast a few every game and it would had required a blind man not to see some of them.
Commenting on penalty decisions and what not is a ridiculous feature, I agree. You have no way of being able to tell so it's pointless. I do an Arsene Wenger if such a question pops up and claim to have saw nothing. My rule is only to comment on dodgy offside decisions, as I am able to tell whether the decision was in fact a correct one or not. More often than not the decision is indeed correct so I'd watch your mouth if you don't know what you are talking about. Looking at the record of a referee is too much hassle for me when from that you're still not guaranteed to know if the ref was in the right or wrong.
