In theory every extra player loaded will slow down your computer. Loading 1 extra player will not slow it down noticable. Loading 2500 extra players will slow your game down so much that you will probably notice it. Every player needs to have it's transferhistory and goalhistory updated of course.
A small example, with non-real numbers that are not based on anything, other then to make the explanation a bit more clear.
Say you have a small database with 1500 players. If you load a small country, for instance you retain Trinidad and Tobago, your game retains about 50 players extra. The game will need to load 1500+50=1550 players. This is not a big difference. If you decide to retain all English players instead of the T&T players, using the same small database, your database will look more like this: 1500+750=2250 players. This is a huge amount of extra players and extra calculations.
There will not be a large database selected (if it works the same as it has been with FM05 and 06.) It will only select the database size of your choosing + the extra players that you wanted to retain.
