i have seen this effect before, and cannot find anything that explains it...but it is to take a square image, and make the shape into a starburst, (what i would call it) without distorting the image, transparent or color of my choice background. any ideas? [confused]

Hi soulmate,

Welcome to the forums. As it wasn't clear to me what you wanted I thought I'd provide a quick image to see if it is even close to what you are after. I hope it will help define your quest!

this is the picture, disregarding the writing, but it looks like a type of blur, or a motion/wind effect. havent been able to figure out anything close, so i am figuring its a 3rd party effect, of which 'eyecandy' is the only one i have

thanks for your reply aso ;\

to get what you want (i think)

1. start with a square document 400x400 works.
2. color it white
3. on a new layer using the rectangle marquee -- select the left 1/2 of your picture, and color it grey. (following you pic example)
4. got to Filter>Stylize>Wind
5. use these settings Blast, From the Left
6. Ctrl+F 3-5 times
7. Go to Filter>Blur>Motion Blur
8. use settings 0, 10-20 pixels
9. Ctrl+F 3-5 times
10. go to Image>Rotate Canvas>90 deg. CW
11. go to Filter>Distort>Polar Coordinates
12. use settings Rectangular to Polar

This is just one way to do it. There are a few other ways to do it, but this will give you something of what you want. Play around with the filters as you are making it to find out what looks good to you!

*sigh* ok,1 thru 3 confuse me. I have a picture i want to apply this effect to, it is approx 290x425... am i starting with this picture, then adding a white and a gray layer? then performing these filters/effects to those 2 layers? i guess i cant tell if i am working with 2 or 3 layers, and i cant actually color 1/2 of the original picture gray, the original picture doesnt paint over fully. i guess this noob needs a bit of clarification if possible.

ok, I was in a rush when I typed that out -- forgive me! Just follow these steps to the "T" and you should have what you seek!

In the Same Document you are working in --

1. Hide all of your other layers.
2. Add 2 new layers (Shift+Ctrl+N - 2 times)
3. Color the first of your new layers white
4. Click on the second new layer to highlight
5. Using the Rectangular Marquee (top left tool in the toolbar on the left) -- Draw a rectangle on the left half of the whole picture. Now go to the 2 little squares that are near the bottom of the toolbar on the left. click on the top square -- now choose a grey color that you like!
6. Grab the Paint Bucket, and fill the rectangle with grey. Now hold down "Ctrl" key and hit the "D" key once.
7. Go to Filter>Stylize>Wind...
8. choose settings BLAST, FROM THE RIGHT ( I know this is backwards from the previous version -- just follow along)
9. NOW hold down the "Ctrl" key and hit the "F" key 3 to 5 times.
10. Go to Filter>Blur>Motion Blur... use settings Angle - zero, Pixels - 33
11. Hold down the "Ctrl" key and hit the "F" key 3 to 5 times.
12. Go to Image>Rotate Canvas>Rotate 90 deg. CCW (this too is different from before -- just keep following)
13. Go to Filter>Distort>Polar Coordinates... choose Rectangular to Polar.
14. You should now have a starburst pattern that looks nice!

Unfortunately I can't show you a bunch of pictures to help, but I hope you can work with this!

oooo, i like that, gotta work on the size of the burst, looks like thats related to the amoint of wind filter applied, i assume (cause i did, heh) that i need to use the magic wand and select the white 'underlayer' and use the eraser tool, clear it out, so u can see thru it, bit only takes out part of the 'starburst'

thank you very much, its very close [righton]
