Wellington Phoenix nationality - help to change it!
As you might have noticed from the title of the topic, the Wellington Phoenix of the Hyundai A League needs changing. It is listed as Australian, which I understand as they play in Australia's league, but their nationality is New Zealand.
Now I know people are going to say "yeh but it is because they play in Australia, but if you look at Toronto FC in the MLS, yeh they play in the USA but if you go to their info screen their nationality is listed as Canadian.
It is also the same for Cardiff City, Swansea City, Wrexham, Newport County and Merthyr Tydfill. These are all listed as English when they should be Welsh.
There are probably more errors like this in the game, and I wouldn't mind leaving it alone but because Toronto FC are listed as Canadian, it is eating away at me!
I wonder if someone could help me put this right, and tell me how to change it because I have no idea.

Some things in the game wont work properly if they had there nationality set as New Zealand. I know one of the things is no reserve teams but that wont affect Wellington since no reserve teams in the A-League anyway. However it might get screwed up with some of the complex A-League rules. You could do a test and see what happens. Just change the club's nationality to New Zealand in the editor.
As for Torrento, the MLS has so much different coding done compared to the other leagues that they must have somehow made it to work.

You forgot to mention Berwick who are listed as Scottish and should be English. :p
But as DS says, things are done this way to stop the game from breaking, and it also stops teams qualifying for continental competition when they shouldn't. Cardiff/Berwick would automatically qualify for the UEFA Cup and such if Wales/England isn't running, reserves wouldn't play, the league rules would get screwed up, if they got relegated, they wouldn't be able to get promoted again etc. etc.

Oh yeah. So if Wellington was set as NZ then they could qualify for the ACL which they cant qualify for (I think in the first 3 seasons they cant). Also if the NZ team in the Oceania club championships is chosen based on reputation then Wellington could easily get chosen.
I think there were no real problems if Torronto were set as Canada and thats why they are.

There are also a host of Leagues in Asia (like Singapore) that have teams from other nations in their Leagues...
The only reason I can see that this couldn't be quickly fixed with Wellington, is the confederation thing...Maybe it'd mess things up there?
However, if this is the case, surely it would be the case with Cardiff etc...Ie. If Wellington would qualify as NZs representitive for Oceania, wouldnt Cardiff qualify as Wales euro qualifier?? I know Cardiff don't so surely Wellington wouldnt either? Or there would be an easy enough work around for SI?
I've noticed in EVERY version, when they were the Kingz, etc they've always been classed as Australia, and it's always annoyed me.

I'm really anal about these things, I may have a go at trying to fix it but I reckon I'll just leave it if there is a risk it will ruin my game. Maybe SI could come up with a solution to this one day?!

A simple solution would be to add an extra field in the club's database table. "Nation Display". So then there would be two nationalities assigned to the club one for competition and confederation framework reasons and the other for displaying the "correct" nationality.
It could be an "optional" field so if there is no nation display set it would simply display the 'normal' nationality of the club. It's a 2 minute job to enter a new field in the database and probably 10minutes to add a piece of code that says if the nation display field is empty then display default nationality.

Clubs would be able to play in the nation set in competition nationality and qualify for international comps as if they were of that nationality, but otherwise would show up as if they were from the nation set at the club nationality field, have youths coming through from that nation, etc..

Dave I think most cases are hard-coded. I had loads of trouble in the past getting teams to get youths from nations they were not from and seemingly it's just hard-coded into the game. Vaduz and Cardiff get Liechtenstein and Welsh youths for instance, yet they're listed as Swiss and English. But Vaduz qualifies for Europe as from Liechtenstein and Cardiff as from England.
"Could be that it uses the town at which the club stadium is located at?" I thought.
No.
If you change a stadium to make it in another country all greys will appear as if they were from that country but youths will come up from the set country of the club, no the stadium location one.
Besides, Hong Kong FC has its stadium in Hong Kong but has English greys.
